transparency sprites? - arc_ray - 04-02-2021

i cant seem to find an answer online so i finally find myself here.
im trying to grab the assets of this room in Metroid Fusion:

with VBA emulator i can see the sprite maps and see what is what,
i can get the wall, door, floor and even the background i needed:

i needed the gradient as well but:
this is how it exports.

to give better detail, when the boss goes to phase 2 this gradient color
overlay goes on the junk background, but its about halftransparent when it does so.
so its not nearly this saturated as you can see in the first pic.
and the black part of the raw rip doesnt seem to exist on the sprite in game,
i went frame by frame to make sure and the background never darkens
when the gradient comes in.

so there are 1 of 2 options im trying to make work:
1. figure out how to rip the transparent version of the gradient.
2. figure out how to turn off the wiggly effect and just take a screencap that way.

i already tried just erasing the lower half of the red gradient in an image editor,
but it seems the color black is being used AS the transparency so it ends up not looking correct at all
for the lower red region.
and that lower red region is not NEARLY that dark in game.

It looks like color math (or Blend Modes for a more general term) to me. I don't know what the exact math is but looks like 70% Opacity with Screen is very close to truth.
Most modern graphic editors support blend modes, but I can't give any recommendations because I've only ever really used Photoshop.

Surprise holy moly, thanks a bunch! i never would have figured that out. seriously, i didnt know image editors
could do different transparency types. much less that you could even mess with that.
