Any way to batch downloading? - Doronetty - 09-14-2016

I have one question - can I somehow download models from Models-resource with batch downloading? One example - the 3DS game Pokémon X / Y have already ripped 561 models. So can I download all of them at once ('cause manual downloading will be veeeery long, boring and useless with another +125 models update after half-year, when I already forgot which models are downloaded and which new)?

There is no way of batch downloading. Please consider the fact that we are independent developers, and our server would die the very minute we activated such a feature.

I'd advise that you simply download the models that you are going to use when you need them, instead of trying to have a complete collection on your computer. Because the site updates so frequently, even some older models that are uploaded receive new versions that fix issues. You'll struggle to keep up regardless.

To expand on what Dazz mentioned, even we (the staff) can't batch-download at that scale. It's a feature I implemented for select users during our icon renovation and it failed on large games. There simply isn't an efficient way to do it and even if we could, as he mentioned, it would completely overwhelm the server.

Is there a reason you feel you need every single model from X and Y at once? We're not going anywhere so they'll always be available on the site.

Heya! New member here, big time believer in game history archival, future site donor. I appreciate the work you and the community of rippers have done!

Have you considered batch downloads via torrents? I'd love to contribute bandwidth to offload some website costs.

RE: Any way to batch downloading? - Petie - 11-24-2016

Hello and welcome! I get where you're coming from but batch download just isn't feasible. The site's content is created dynamically so we couldn't even provide proper torrents outside of maybe known complete games. It would just be too difficult to manage properly.

Your offer is definitely appreciated though. Out of curiosity, what is it that you need a feature like this for though?

RE: Any way to batch downloading? - Nereke - 11-26-2016

Mainly to archive, but also to keep around as reference.

RE: Any way to batch downloading? - Petie - 11-26-2016

That seems to be the basis behind most of the suggestions for this feature and I always counter it the same way - is there some reason you can't use the site itself for said archive/reference? The site isn't going anywhere so it's not like you'll be losing access to anything (and it's much more convenient and space-deficient on your end to just grab what you need when you need it). Is there some benefit you see to having a local copy of everything?

I believe the reason for the need for archiving is because of negative experiences from the past.
Sites like vid.me, KAT stayed for some time and then disappeared to point of no return. Many people might have spend years of building stuff on these sites, then to see it gone. Sometimes without a prior notice. Sometimes because of the owners and sometimes because of DMCA takedowns.
As a website providing files from protected works, it is even more vurnerable to extinction. Thousands of users spent years making games in Game Maker and then uploading them to their website yoyo.gamemaker.com, if it wasn't for Wayback Machine, it would be gone from the majority likely yet. Some of these games were viewed as a joke by their creators by some years passing while some others might have pulled their life masterpiece on a site like that. They might be in the unpopular territory where barely anyone plays them, though there's a chance some hidden gems would be found decades after publication just like it works with works of geniuses. But if the site would be gone there ain't such probability.

So that's why so many people obsess over archiving, to some extent, maybe yet..

Trust me, I get it. I understand that while there may be some who just want to re-upload, most simply want to make sure the content isn’t lost. Unfortunately, there really isn’t a good way to make that happen.

Make an android / Linux/ Windows / Mac app for it admins Smug Zzz... Defeated

RE: Any way to batch downloading? - Petie - 12-19-2020

Did you even read the rest of this thread? Making an app do it wouldn’t make any difference in terms of why we already don’t offer this.
