Help With Noesis/Ripping in General - StarboundDragon - 02-04-2015

I want to rip sprites for a steam game called Starbound. It's an indie game similar to Terraria. I decided to try ripping for the first time, but, while some sprites could be ripped easily with a screenshot, some can't, so I want to use some kind of tool to do it. Is Noesis the best option? And if so, how do I use it?

The main problems are the spinny arms and liquids.

No, Noesis deals with models and textures, not this sort of thing.
  • Right click the game in the steam library and click on "Properties".
  • Click the "Local Files" tab.
  • Click "Browse Local Files...".
  • Click the "Assets" folder.
In there you'll find everything related to Starbound, the graphics and sounds. :>

I found a file called "packed.pak" and the music, but no graphics. Would the graphics be in the .pak? If so, how do I open it?

My bad, it's changed a bit since last I checked.

To open the .pak:
  • Copy the packed.pak file and paste it into the Win32 folder
  • Create a new folder within the Win32 folder and name it "dump"
  • Hold Shift then Right Click the Win32 folder and open a command window.
  • Type this in the window
Code:
asset_unpacker.exe packed.pak dump
Give it a minute or two while everything is being unpacked into the new folder you made.

That should make everything viewable. Smile

It says "asset_unpacker" is not recognized as a command.

Are you opening the command window by shift-right clicking the actual folder for Win32?

Nevermind, I found out how to do it.
On further investigation, many if the files are stored as custom file types such as .SWORD, .HEAD, and so on. The few actual sprites are limited and sometimes useless. I get the feeling much of the game is randomly generated, and not just terrain, based on file and folder names.

What are you looking for in particular? I'm not seeing any files like that.

General sprites really, but for personal use, I can just screen capture. I was thinking of submitting sprites, but it seems either very difficult or that I have no idea what I'm doing. Perhaps something went wrong with the unpacking, but there are very few actual sprites. Another problem may be that my computer may not have enough room on it, as most of the storage space has been used up. I may try unpacking to my external drive.

Well, like I said, it seems to have worked on my end. I can upload anything you're wanting.

The main thing I wanted was the various player sprites.

This should be everything related to characters. The colors look odd, but that's because the desired colors are added in-game during the customization process.
