3D Printing - Rho - 08-23-2014

So, I fixed up the model for Kakuna from Pokémon Stadium 2 for 3D printing as a keychain and thought you guys might like to see the results. I've ordered it and it should arrive in a few weeks. It was a pretty fun process, and wasn't too difficult. I used Autodesk's free programs Meshmixer and 123d Design. If it turns out well, I might try to make some more.

That is really neat!

As a guy who's invested in manufacturing, gotta ask: what site/company did you use to print your stuff? I've been a pretty big fan of Shapeways, though I never really had the time to actually make anything there.

Can't wait to see the final result!

Thanks! Yeah, I used Shapeways. It's the first time I've ever tried it, but I had a coupon from Autodesk. They send them out every now and then, so I decided to try. I hope it turns out as good as it looks in the renders.

That shot glass looks pretty nice. If I drank, I'd want it to be from one of those.

I like the P Wing and DK Coin. They're fantastic.

Yeah. Not to mention that the minimum order on Shapeways is 15 dollars, so the P-Wing was so cheap that I had to buy TWO of them. Never bought the DK coin though

EDIT: Here's a funny story of the Finnish lapphund pendant.
My wife-to-be... or, well, we have a Finnish lapphund, Malla. The love of our life.
We were at this one party last october, and she drew a simple sketch of Malla to the guestbook. After the party, I contacted the host to send me a photograph of the sketch to me, which I scanned and threw onto Cinema 4D. I used that as the base for the pendant model and printed it out of Sterling silver and gave it to her as a Christmas present.
So in short, she designed her own present without even realizing it.

I'm new to 3D printing and I'm just wondering, can you get into legal hot water for having 3D prints made from models that you ripped from games (like the Kakuna model)?

BTW, Raccoon Sam, I don't suppose you plan to make any Mario pipe beer mugs in the future, do you? LOL

I wouldn't take the risk unless you print it with your own 3D printer or something.
It's not only unethical, but might also lead you to in all sorts of legal trouble.

that would cost like a billion dollars plus beer is icky

RE: 3D Printing - NICKtendo DS - 08-30-2014

Does a Mario pipe beer mug really have to be printed? It sounds like something that can be easily crafted with the right tools and resources.

Okay, thanks for the clarification.
Apparently I still have much to learn about this newfangled contraption that you kids today are calling the "three dee prin-ter".
