Obviously a horror game.

I don't play horror games, but I'm thinkin' that's the new Fatal Frame.

RE: GAMER LOUNGE 20XX (NO CASUALS!!) - Kriven - 07-20-2014

It's Fatal Frame.

For a while I was hoping it was a sequel to The Calling, but that'll never happen.

RE: GAMER LOUNGE 20XX (NO CASUALS!!) - Koopaul - 07-21-2014

Ah I should have guessed that.

FREEDOM PLANET from galaxytrail is a cool 2d platformer inspired by classic sega titles of the same or similar genre

it's out on steam and will likely soon be available on other platforms

i just bought the game today and i'm thoroughly enjoying it

Man that trailer was impressive, like I was really surprised

I don't even know if I'd even like this game, but the trailer made me so giddy watching it that I really want to try it out

EDIT: I played the demo from the website, it is simply childhood incarnate
If you have any fondness for the genesis-style platformers of yesteryear, you owe it to yourself to give this one a try

RE: GAMER LOUNGE 20XX (NO CASUALS!!) - Kriven - 07-22-2014

And that's how all indie games should look.

RE: GAMER LOUNGE 20XX (NO CASUALS!!) - AuraLancer - 07-22-2014

No, they shouldn't all look like that. We could definitely go with having more that look like that though.

First thing when I get more funds for my Steam account, I'm buying that game.

I don't get this whole "indie game='retro-style' pixels" thing that a lot of people huff about.

Yeah, indie titles don't need pixel art to be indie, what they need is an independent developer.
The visual aesthetic is kind of a moot point in that regard, but if the design of the game is to emulate or
recreate the authentic feel of actual period correct artwork, then yeah I'm pretty sure that well made pixels are preferred.

Fact is that most older gamers (which many current indie devs are) have a soft spot for pixels, so they do seem to be a goto style.
The problem is that many indie titles using pixels as visual media don't seem to have any actual artists that have any pixel experience,
and that tends to lead to a flood of rubbish pixel games where no matter how solid the gameplay is, most will take a glance at the game's
ugly face and turn away.

I suppose that is probably the problem for most people with pixel indie titles. The worst ones artistically are usually the ones that never
shut up about their "RETRO STYLE 8-BIT GRAPHICS." The visual media used in a game should reflect the gameplay mechanics therein,
and shouldn't be used as a crutch to garner passerby support .

This game's gameplay and art design roots lie in the Genesis era, and the effect is well done, and pleasing to the eye;
that is, if you liked Genesis games back in the day. It does exactly what it is supposed to without being obnoxious about it.

[11:58:56 PM] Vipershark: http://freedomplanet.galaxytrail.com/ this is like everything i've ever wanted
[11:58:59 PM] Vipershark: it's so 90s i love it
[11:59:21 PM] 엔지: I thought it looked cool until i watched the trailer and realized how obnoxiously furry it is
[11:59:55 PM] Vipershark: ignore the furry and the dub (but the dub adds to the 90s charm i guess)
[11:59:56 PM] Sploder: "I hate this whole nostalgia thing" -Vipershark
[12:00:07 AM] Vipershark: there's a big difference sploder
[12:00:21 AM] Vipershark: there's nostalgia for the sake of nostalgia
[12:00:34 AM] Vipershark: aka fake "8-bit" and "retro pixel graphics"
[12:00:48 AM] Mutsukki: ...well this is retro pixel graphics
[12:01:04 AM] 엔지: it's quality retro pixel graphics though haha
[12:01:10 AM] Vipershark: then there's stuff like this that's heavily inspired but still manages to be its own thing
[12:01:15 AM] Vipershark: yeah, there's a big quality difference
[12:01:23 AM] Vipershark: it's clear that they put actual dedication into it
[12:01:22 AM] Mutsukki: I'm honestly not a fan of the main character sprites
[12:01:23 AM] Mutsukki: at allllll
[12:01:30 AM] Mutsukki: maybe it's the eyes
[12:01:34 AM] 엔지: i don't like their designs
[12:01:34 AM] Vipershark: they're a bit too furry and sonic for me but
[12:01:38 AM] Vipershark: the game actually looks good
[12:02:19 AM] Vipershark: it's so sega saturn
[12:02:20 AM] Vipershark: ahahah
