A couple of days ago, some tools were released onto the internet to allow people to dump the filesystems from 3DS games. Problem being (for me) it requires a 3DS with an older firmware to work due to how it works (using the 3DS itself to decrypt 'em), and it won't work on the newest games that require version 7.0 or above.

VERY OFF TOPIC: wouldn't it be cool if you could download all of the sheets with pushing something like DOWNLOAD ALL SHEETS or DOWNLOAD ALL or something like that. That would be pretty awesome.

BACK ON TOPIC: really?! So that means we COULD rip something from 3ds games! AWESOME! RIP MODELS FROM KIRBY TRIPLE DELUXE!

This has been brought up before and isn't going to happen. The feature exists, experimentally, for the icon renovation only and even then, it doesn't work well. Opening that up to the public would wreak havoc on our server and bandwidth.

Once again, My ignorance is very annoying. Deepest Apologies. On the subjects of the 3ds however, This is VERY exciting. Maybe we could rip Mario and Luigi Dream team! Seems like an old enough game to be able to rip from. I wouldn't know, Most latest console I rip from is the SNES with SNESX9. But still, this is AWESOME!

Is it maybe possible to include OGG as an accepted audio format for the Sounds Resource? Many games use it nowadays, and needing to convert hundreds of files to MP3 or WAV can be a bit annoying. It's a fairly popular format now as well, and to my knowledge it's supported by most good media players (although unfortunately, not Windows Media Player). It's also supported by many game makers and programming languages so they aren't too difficult to use in fangames.

It's still not quite as widely usable as WAV or MP3 though, so I can understand if this isn't accepted. I just thought it would be worth suggesting.

Speaking of 3DS rips, once we have more DS and 3DS games on The Models Resource, could we have DS and 3DS both as one section, similar to how PS1, 2, and 3 are all one section too?

RE: Suggestions - eureka - 09-02-2014

I am just wondering about one thing about this whole 3DS ripping thing. How far HAVE we come to ripping REALLY popular games like for instance, Kirby Triple Deluxe, or Fire Emblem Awakening?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the issue with this being that OGG isn't as high-quality? Or was it simply because it's a weird format?

RE: Suggestions - Paladin - 09-02-2014

There is slight quality loss, but it's hardly noticable. I know lots of people who convert all their downloaded music to .ogg because it takes little space and still sounds good.

RE: Suggestions - Vipershark - 09-02-2014

Personally, I believe that we should only host lossless sounds (when possible) or the highest available quality if a lossless version doesn't exist.
If we're going to host audio, we should host it at the highest quality we can and give the downloading user the option of downsampling it to whatever quality they want rather than forcing a lossy copy.

RE: Suggestions - puggsoy - 09-02-2014

OGG is indeed lossy, but to my knowledge it's not a great difference from MP3. I do agree that sounds should be kept in the highest quality possible, and as such converted to WAV if it's a strange format.

However if the files are already in OGG format (as is the case with some voices I've recently ripped), then converting them to WAV greatly blows up the size with no quality increase, and converting to MP3 probably loses even more quality. In this case I think that it should be acceptable as the format's not as obscure now as it was, say, 5 years ago.

RE: Suggestions - Vipershark - 09-02-2014

Yeah, that was pretty much my point as well: if the source files are OGG to begin with then they should be fine assuming that there are no lossless versions, but if they're WAVs (or another lossless format) then they shouldn't be downsampled to MP3 or OGG before uploading.

RE: Suggestions - Garamonde - 09-03-2014

As stated in the sound upload rules, MP3 can be virtually lossless as well while being much smaller than WAVs when converted to VBR quality using something like Audacity. But yes I agree that if it's OGG to begin with then I don't see any reason for it to not be acceptable.

RE: Suggestions - Vipershark - 09-03-2014

I guess overall my point is that we shouldn't be converting a lossy format to another lossy format. If it's OGG, it should not be converted to MP3 before uploading.

RE: Suggestions - Dazz - 09-03-2014

Agreed.
