Checking Palette Colours? - Chirp - 12-07-2012

I'm not sure if this belongs in the 'Spriting and Pixel Art' or in 'Questions, Info and Tutorials' section, but anyways.

I've noticed that in some posts, there are people that note on how many colours are used.

How do you check how many palette colours are being used on a sprite? I know how to make my own usable palette to work with, but I have no idea how one would go about checking every single colour/shade.

Many programs have some some options somewhere.

I personally use PhotoFiltre (6.5.3, the free version) a lot. In the file menu is an "Image Properties" item that opens a small dialog with a bunch of information, including the colour count.

Several other programs have such options, too, but I don't know of any at the moment.

In GIMP 2.8 you can go to Colors -> Info -> Colorcube Analysis. It'll give some information, including the number of colors in the image.

You can also generate the palette of the image by opening the Palettes tab, right-clicking inside it and selecting Import Palette. Select Image as the Source and then you can save it as a palette. You can export it to other external formats by right-clicking on it and selecting Export as, and choosing your format.
