I understand your point...

Well, what do you suggest I name the sheet then? Puggsy levels are organized in areas, and most enemies are exclusive to one area (i.e. Crabs only appear on the Beach), so should I do something like "Beach Enemies" for enemies exclusive to the Beach?

I think that's a good idea. But enemies that appear in more than one area (like Raccoons) should still have their own sheets. This will be OK, since ones that appear in different areas typically have a different type/colour for each area, so they'll have fairly big sheets.

But before I do this, I'd like to hear somebody's thoughts.

The Raccoons were an exception due to their many variations, the rest of the small frys should be on a single sheet.

RE: puggsoy's Puggsy sprites - puggsoy - 01-03-2012

I understand that. I ask that you reread my post and say your opinion on the idea.

RE: puggsoy's Puggsy sprites - Davy Jones - 01-03-2012

Depends~

How many enemies can you put on each area sheet? And how many areas has this game?

RE: puggsoy's Puggsy sprites - puggsoy - 01-03-2012

Quite a few, I'd estimate more than 10. However, some areas have very few levels, sometimes 1 (that's mostly with secret levels), although they could have more than 1 enemy. Also, some areas only have 1 type of enemy, despite having multiple levels, in which case I don't know if it'd be better to name the sheet as an area sheet or an enemy sheet. For example, I figured out last night that Crabs are the only enemies in the Beach area.

In any case, enemies that appear in more than 1 area (which don't occur very often, mind you), such as Raccoons, would have their own sheets.

Oh, and I'd have quite a few enemies on each area sheet. Each area typically has approximately 5 enemies, with exceptions of course (such as the Beach, as mentioned above).

Does that all make sense? I think I'll do this anyway, but it'd be nice to hear someone else's opinion.
For clarification, think of areas as worlds, where each contains multiple levels.

How about making sheets that have a few areas each? You could have "Area 1, 2 & 3 Enemies" for example, and you could label which enemies are from which areas on the sheet obviously. If you really don't want to make one big sheet for them all, then that will be much more efficient than having a bunch of sheets like that shellfish. Just consider it.

RE: puggsoy's Puggsy sprites - puggsoy - 01-04-2012

Well, I see your point, but I'd prefer to just have one area per sheet.

I think I'll just do that. I'll upload the first few soon, but should I then delete the old ones? Or keep them for reference or something?

RE: puggsoy's Puggsy sprites - Garamonde - 01-04-2012

You don't have to delete them, you can just say to ignore the ones posted above, and it'll be good.

You know, if you wanted you could also have the new sheets in your first post as well, so people can see your submissions immediately. Also, let me teach you something neat:

Code:
[url=*link to sheet goes here*][img]*link to icon goes here*[/img][/url]

Without the asterisks. Basically, this

plus this

...equals this (click on it)! Smile

RE: puggsoy's Puggsy sprites - puggsoy - 01-04-2012

Yeah, I read that you can do that in the Submissions Forum For Beginners thread. But I prefer to do it the way I'm currently doing it, dunno why.

However, I have an idea. I'll merge both your ideas, and I will post my new sheets in the OP using that fancy technique. That way, people can see my new sheets easily in the OP, but it won't make the post unnecessarily massive.

Normal submissions in new posts will just include both the icon and sheet like normal, though.

RE: puggsoy's Puggsy sprites - Garamonde - 01-04-2012

Sounds good, just thought I'd mention it. Looking forward to seeing your new sheets. Smile

RE: puggsoy's Puggsy sprites - puggsoy - 01-05-2012

Hey, while looking for the rest of the enemies for one area (The Cove) I noticed that there is actually another kind of Starfish, although the only difference is in colour.
Just wondering what I should do with that. Should I rip the other Starfish completely, or should I make a palette? If the latter, could someone direct me to a good palette tutorial? I might not need it, but it might help.

RE: puggsoy's Puggsy sprites - Garamonde - 01-05-2012

Nah, just rip one sprite (usually just the standing pose) of each alt. color and include it so people can easily recolor it.

RE: puggsoy's Puggsy sprites - puggsoy - 01-05-2012

OK, here they are!

I know the first one is pretty much identical to my initial Crabs sheet, but Crabs are the only enemy in the Beach. No big deal though.

RE: puggsoy's Puggsy sprites - Yawackhary - 01-05-2012

I noticed that you're getting better every time, not that your ripping is bad (it's actually quite good). The only thing wrong really is that the palette is a tiny bit off but I can fix it for you when you nearly done ripping all the enemies.

Anyway I might as well give you a tip (unless you are aware of it), Puggsy has some copy protection in game and after a few levels, it displays an Anti-Piracy screen. This is due to that it is accessing the save function (SRAM) even though the game doesn't use it at all. If there's an option on your emulator, disable SRAM (Kega Fusion) or untick Enable SRAM (Gens/GS).

Can't remember if the level select code still detects this screen or unlocks all the stages though.

RE: puggsoy's Puggsy sprites - puggsoy - 01-06-2012

Thanks Big Grin
I'm not finished with ripping all the enemies (by far), but if you can tell me what's wrong then maybe I can do it myself. I'm actually not too clear on palettes myself, if you could link me to a tutorial of some sort that kind of explains what a palette is and how to work with them that'd be great.

I'm totally aware about SRAM with Puggsy, I played through it due nostalgia a few years back and had to figure that out the hard way. It made me discover Kega Fusion though, which is much better than any other Genesis emulator I know.
However, Megasis (which I'm using now for ripping) seems to disable SRAM automatically. Either that, or it's because I'm using a password. All the same, thanks for that Wink
