I need help ripping Spyro models (PSX) - Corey_Faure - 07-20-2011

I've been having no luck with trying to use 3D Ripper DX with a DirectX ePSXe plugin. I got a frame to import at some point, but it was useless because the model was completely flat. It's like it recorded all X and Z coordinates, but every Y coordinate was at 0.

If anyone was successful in ripping 3D models from PSX games, please share your knowledge with me.

All I need is the model, I don't need it textured at all. I'm looking to capture the Sunrise Spring homeworld in Spyro, Year of the Dragon, in specific.

About obtaining a model, you're pretty much out of luck. You could try using an OpenGL-ripper with a PSX emulator on the game (that apparently worked for someone,) or if you have a PSP, using the psplamb plugin with it on a POPstation-converted version of the game. You could also try converting the models directly from the game's files, though no tools for this game exist to do so.

Here is more information on the psplamb plugin, and instructions for its use. There is also good information on OpenGL rippers in the Game Specific Model Ripping guides topic in this forum. But I'm not gaurunteeing much except a hassle, the rest is up to chance. If you do decide to try the psplamb option in particular, post the result of it. I would be interested to see if it works.

I'm going to guess I'll have to hack my PSP to a custom firmware version for that to work?

In order to play POPstation-converted PSX games, you probably will. I haven't looked for alternative converters, because apparently POPstation is the most reliant and supported one.

Okay, I managed to get a 3D Ripper frame, but since the PlayStation had no Z-buffer, it will always turn out flat. So, using 3D Ripper or any frame capture software will pretty much always result in a "screenshot" of flat geometry, oriented the way the screen is.

I give up on importing a 3D model into hammer to finish my project. Rather, I found an alternative to getting reference to what I'm building. Thanks to cheat engine and the ability to move the camera while swimming: Tada!

Now I need a way to overlay this over hammer so I can work with precision. Anyone know how to overlay an image over windows?

Uh... Not really, no. I noticed what one user had wrote while researching how to rip PSX models quite a while ago. They apparently had managed to rip PSX models using an OpenGL-ripper with ePSXe, but did not recall how they did it and did not provide evidence that it worked. It might have been a bluff, but I suppose it's worth looking into.

Make the picture into a texture (VMT +VTF) and make a very large, flat brush in Hammer that will sit under everything. Now apply the texture you made onto the top of this brush. Ta-da.

Wrong topic, necropost and as unspecific as it can be. Pay attention to what you're doing, read more carefully and try to express yourself in a way that makes clear what your problems are, please!
