I think you have some symmetry problem going on?
BTW guys Sculptris is great if you want to get into 3d sculpting.
Are his feet super wide at the sides?

I've been using the mirror modifier, it might be that th picture is at an angle

What I meant is, why is there a seam going down the middle of the sculpt?

That's the mirroring. The vertexes aren't welded and so there's a seam in the middle. Its something you usually fix later when you're done with the symmetrical portions.

oh that. that's a line of symmetry i use as a guideline. it's not part of the model
