New to sprites... - JayEye - 02-26-2010

I'm planning a big project to rip Zelda sprites from every game, and to be honest I don't know much about how to. I'm new to things like roms and emulators, but I'm really excited to get into this.

I'd be grateful if someone could tell me, simply, how to get started. Or even better if anyone can tell me exactly what programs I'll need and how to use them.

Uhh....

I think all of them are ripped...

Its pointless.

RE: New to sprites... - JayEye - 02-27-2010

Not to sound rude, but they aren't. I'm talking about ALL the sprites and graphics from ALL the Zelda games. If they're all out there I've never found them.

And in any case, I'd still appreciate if someone could explain to me how sprite ripping works. I know there's topic that has a ton of useful info, but a lot of the terms are lost on me.

if you worry about this, you don't belong here

just sayin

I'm not surprised considering the warm welcome I've recieved.

Maybe if youre brand new to this, you shouldnt plan, "big project to rip Zelda sprites from every game", when you already said, "to be honest I don't know much about how to"...

Start out small.

Maybe figure out how, then try it.

Even if they arent all there, why rip the ones that are? Just get the ones that arent, and be useful.

RE: New to sprites... - JayEye - 02-27-2010

That's exactly the idea. But I can't do anything big or small without knowing how. I just thought some nice people from my favorite sprite site would be willing to help but I guess I "don't belong here".

Well the thing is, you're idea is a bit ambitious for a newbie. That's not a bad thing as many people without much experience tend to do that. There's nothing wrong with what you want to do, but you have to give us an idea of where you want to start if you want help since one method for ripping may not work for another game. Also, I'd be prepared for harsh criticism.

I wouldn't call anyone here really an asshole, but many of us aren't willing to pull punches on what we say and it can be a bit discouraging. Just do your best to listen to the points people try to make to you because all too often people in your situation will take criticism as a personal offense rather than a harsh review of what they've ripped/sprited.

RE: New to sprites... - nicktheslayer - 02-27-2010

Well, its true, a lot of us are assholes, Shy , but that shouldnt keep you from trying.

You did look a bit stupid though, planning a big project, that you didnt even know how to get started.

Once a few people see that you are working it out step by step, and not rushing things, they might be more open to giving you help.

No one is saying you dont belong here, but what you are doing isnt really acceptable here.

I cant help you with ripping, because i have no clue how, but im sure if you ask around, someone could point you in the direction of a tutorial somewhere.

(also, im not really an asshole, but i so give some harsh crits sometimes,)

RE: New to sprites... - JayEye - 02-27-2010

Thank you Shadowth117, I'll see if I can't be more specific.

I wouldn't quite call myself a newbie, I have a lot of experience with all kinds of computer art and sprites. I just haven't ever ripped them before. Most of what I don't understand is how to use the emulators and what the differences between them are. (If it helps at all, I was planning to start with the Oracle series.)

RE: New to sprites... - Shadowth117 - 02-27-2010

The first post of this thread should have some good information on that. For most of the older games there's usually many ways to rip from them. Make sure to check the site too before you rip something to make sure it hasn't already been ripped unless you're submitting a more complete version of a sheet that's already there.
