Make 3 or more episodes at 5 bucks each rather than one whole game at ~10 bucks gets you more cash. Not to mention a possible "compilation" game on disc could be sold for 30 bucks, and chances are that downloaders would get the disc also, meaning they'd get repeat buyers, aka more cash.

I think that was more from a business standpoint.

i might rememind everyone in the thread that Sonic 1 was as risky as Sonic 4, in terms of making something and see if it appealed the masses. it wasn't until sonic 2 when the game/character showed its true potential(wich doesnt deny s1 was great(its actually harder(fucking one hit spikes Very Sad)))

yeah, but s1 was the establishment of a new series so your argument is basically killed right there
obviously a brand new series would be like that

anyway aside from sega doing it from a money standpoint, what kind of sense does it make to rehash the old games anyway? Especially since they pulled the sequel card, meaning this happens after S1-S3K, why is robotnik going back to his old machines that sonic has already beaten?

Same with metal sonic. It looks as if he's going to be introduced in the next episode, which makes no sense seeing as he's been out for forever.

Though I personally don't consider Sonic CD to be canon so if you take that in mind it sort of makes sense.

Still though. Sega just fucked up the entire canon with this. They don't care anymore.

how does the cannon of the storyline affects the game's mechanics. in a platformer. with no storyline whatsoever. in what we already know is not a sequel but a remake of the series.

i'd like to know.

e: because my point is actually, storyline in the platformers is at best used to give some sort fo continuity between the games, but its not like it affects drastically how the game moves or the ignorance of said storyline affects what one percives from the game or how its played. it just puts some sense as to why would you go over and over afterthe same fat old man. unlike in the later 3D games where it is part of the game itself.

How is Sonic CD not canon when it introduced Amy and Metal Sonic and was directly referenced in Sonic Adventure?

And taking in consideration that Eggman is rebuilding all of his machines in Sonic 4, the Metal Sonic silhouette might mean that Eggman rebuilt Metal Sonic all over and not that it had just been built.

Ah, whatever, it's not like Sonic 4 Episode 1 actually has a storyline.

your argument still makes no sense whatsoever and tyvon's post is still correct

not to mention that there definitely is a canon story in the original games, although there is no actual text telling it.
I personally don't know the part that has the transition from Sonic 1 to Sonic 2, but if you pay attention, sonic 2 through S&K all tell a different part of the same story.

In S2, sonic fights robotnik who eventually boards his wing fortress and flies up to the death egg
sonic follows, and defeats him
at the end of the game he jumps from the death egg and lands on tails' plane

this is where s3 starts and obviously by the cutscene at the beginning it happens directly after s2.
sonic has already collected all the emeralds (from s2), and lands on angel island where he meets knuckes and finds out robotnik is still up to no good

eventually sonic chases robotnik to the launch base, where he launches the death egg again after it gets destroyed in sonic 2
this is where S&K begins and knuckles' story branches off

sonic falls from the launching rocket and lands in mushroom hill
he then eventually gets aboard the death egg yet again, and destroys it for the second time, then chases down robotnik who has stolen the master emerald as a last ditch effort

knuckles' S&K story (when you're playing as him only; it's different when you play as sonic) begins and takes place a few hours after sonic's story ends, which is why he never actually fights robotnik (aside from the oversight in flying battery 2 where they didn't include the robo egg sprite) and instead has to fight robo-egg who is still following robotnik's programming and activates metal sonic mk II

how does any of this already established story lead into sonic 4

i didn't say there is no storyline, i said it is at most used to give some sort of continuity between s2 and s3, but it doesnt change the fact there is no story in the game itself(all the plot is written and told outside the game).

ignoring this storyline/cannon whatsoever doesnt affect in the least minimun bit how the game is played, not you will lose an important aspect of it. the games itself have no plot besides getting to the end of the level and defeat eggman(and get the emeralds in the process). as crude as it sounds, its just a nice "touch" but it is completely optional. as if SMB3 started with mario waking up from a dream. but it doesnt, and it doesnt change in the least bit the whole game.

as i see it, Sonic 4 could easily retell the whole "story", introducing all the characters in each episode all over again. act surprised when Tails is announced in S4:2

it's pretty smart how they did it
every level in S3K has a small cutscene at the beginning and end that tells why and how sonic got to each level and how he gets to where he goes next.
some of them are interactive cutscenes.

Not a single word is spoken in the entire game, yet it still visually tells an entire story simply by the characters' reactions.

as for the rest of your post, I see what you mean. Though I still find it incredibly stupid that they're billing the game as "the true sequel" but it isn't. At all.
