So the lightsource is in between the viewer and the ship, isn't it? That's something that usually ends up looking quite unnatural.

Have a quick partial edit to illustrate what I mean.

I have bad eye sight Sad so I have to make it this big to get an actual feel for the sprite. I can make it smaller for you if you want though Smile

Also, I tried many a shading with the ship, looked at a ton of examples and honestly they ALL look unnatural, especially the official Nintendo sprites.

But I feel what gives the shading a more unnatural look more than anything else is the colors I've limited myself to. I guess there is no reason to limit the ship (which is much larger) to the same size pallet of samus. Some white can make a huge difference..

I'll keep in mind what you said but honest I've tried and it just looks butt if you apply that source all over the ship.

Do you use the zoom function in the program you're using?

Yes, I do as well. Years of sitting in front of the computer have left my eyes very dull.

Here is some more work on the shading. I feel like this is the closest I've come to the concept of Metroid ships since my first sprite. All it needed was 2 more colors (white and lighter green) and the shading all of a sudden didn't look so bad. I also emphasized the red more for added depth.

Here it is larger for us blind people

Also I find it looks better if I step 3 feet away from my computer and look at the sprite from upside down between my legs. No, seriously, try it Surprise

RE: Some metroid sprites - Ailit - 01-27-2013

I think I'm pretty much done with the ship..
I'll come back to it later but I really need to get working on the running
animation recolor and some tiles to at least get a basic set going.

Larger

RE: Some metroid sprites - Phaze - 01-27-2013

Just a tip but you can probably save time by omitting the larger version since you can enlarge a page (and images on it) with CTRL and +, getting close to the same size image.

I'm going to redo the left running sprite based on the right.

Any suggestions? Heard one about the arm cannon being something something.. yeah.

C&C

Only thing I could pick out is the actual speed/pacing, it's more like she's taking a leisurely jog.

Otherwise, it looks grand to me - I seem to even see a shadow on her jetpack-thing! Big Grin

Yeah I forgot to speed it up, here it is.

Slightly bigger for more detail.

I'll tweak the arm cannon a bit, as always suggestions are welcome.

RE: Some metroid sprites - McMaxxis - 01-28-2013

Oh man that is looking better than I remember. Great job!

RE: Some metroid sprites - Ridge Troopa - 01-28-2013

Very awesome stuff so far, looking forward to more progress!
If I have to nitpick one thing on that animation, it's that the feet may look a bit too long when at the top/back frame.

RE: Some metroid sprites - Novally - 01-29-2013

I envy the animations. Running animations have never been my strong suit.

RE: Some metroid sprites - Ailit - 01-29-2013

Ok so I think I'm done tweaking the right_running sprite so I'll start working on the left tomorrow and if I get to it I'm redoing all the aim poses I had for her. Everything I've done up until now needs to be updated to this standard.

Here is the latest if not final running pose (slowed down an extra 25%)

Slightly larger

RE: Some metroid sprites - Ailit - 01-30-2013

Tweaked a bit more and finished left running sprite.

larger

Going to work on aiming sprites now.. see you guys soon.

RE: Some metroid sprites - Novally - 01-30-2013

Some anatomy of Samus to help. I find these funny and could help you with more poses:

I found these thinking it was funny about her fitting in her suit:
But this is actually how she fits (still makes little sense to me).

RE: Some metroid sprites - Ailit - 01-30-2013

Ah damn it I forgot to edit something on the running animations.. I'll repost it later with another update.

No Comments or Critics (of the sprite I mean)?
