That being said say if a skilled player were to pick up Super Mario World today then he'd be able to whizz through it like nothing and beat the game 100%

That's kind of what I meant by my post.

that was a rather unnavoidable feature seeing the original SMBs had no way to save your progress,. that, and the fact that it was meant to be that way to extent the life of the game even futher.

Despite this, SMW is still infinitely more fun than NSMBW and NSMB2.

In my opinion it isn't the "Challenge" or "Lack of challenge" that has ruined the past few Mario games. There's just nothing memorable about them. They don't have a personality. They simply exist.

RE: Mario bores me... - Gors - 10-05-2012

Honestly, I don't think SMW is all that fun anymore tbh. But that might be because I've played it since a kid, and all the 'cool stuff' has been discovered and done to death. I still have fun playing it, but by netplaying and killing myself just before reaching a goal post so the 2P would need to do the entire stage again, and so on.

I don't know if it's like this for you, but I think that the 'fun' comes from the fact that you've discovered those stuff when you were small, so you have fond memories of it. It's hard to be impressed when you're older.

I'm sure a large part of it is nostalgia, yeah. I can agree with that. But I also genuinely have fun with the game itself, even though I've beaten a few a dozen times over my life. There are plenty of other games that are nostalgic for me that I don't really have fun with anymore, but keep around solely for their importance to my personal history. It isn't like that with SMW. It's a genuinely fun game for me.

This and even after not playing it for a few years, it's actually pretty damn interesting to rediscover practically everything in SMW even though you already know how to play the levels.

Honestly I would like to see a complete remake of SMW. Not because it's "oh hey nostalgia" or anything like that. It's partially because I feel like it'd be interesting to see what else can be done with a game that has been around for so long. As long as it doesn't have NSMB graphics and has it's own in favor of completely new graphics I'm all for it.

RE: Mario bores me... - Candel - 10-06-2012

I honestly rather see a remake of SMB2

You mean Doki Doki Panic?

I've always found the Mario games to be pretty easy. But this is mostly because we've grown up playing games that were challenging. Times have changed. Back in the day, you'd play a game and keep losing until you eventually got better at it. What seems to be the rage today is gamer rage; lose two or three times, curse at the tv even though it can't talk back, throw a controller, perhaps flip a table, and then play another game.

They don't have as much patience now a days.

No doubt SMW is easier today than it was "back then" but not to the extent of NSMB. And SMB 3 has some pretty hard(ish) levels, specially towards the end.

However, challenging doesn't have to mean harder. A game can be easy, but still feel challenging. You hardly need to even pay attention to what you're doing on NSMB to get to the end of the level, and the bosses died so quickly I have no idea what any of them actually do (minus the one you have to do as mini Mario, I saw him attack).

That feeling that I, as the player, am I actually doing something just wasn't there with NSMB. Epic Kirby was super-easy, but it still engaged me as a player. The player is almost passive with NSMB.

RE: Mario bores me... - Garamonde - 10-06-2012

Kirby's Epic Yarn is freaking amazing. It's actually kind of a challenge getting gold medals on everything.
But yeah just wanted to say that, don't wanna drift off-topic or anything.

Go play Super Meat Boy. Seriously, some levels had to I try well over 50 (maybe even 100) times before I got to the end. Then another 20 to get A+, and maybe 40 to get the bandage. The best part is that it's supposed to be like that, and anybody who doesn't like it isn't a gamer.

If that isn't enough then I think I Wanna Be The Guy is like about a million times harder or something. Haven't tried it though (SMB's warp zone for the Kid is impossible enough).

Uhm what.
I play games, I am a gamer. I do not like it when I have to play the same level over and over. A few tries, alright, but once it becomes too repetitive, I'd rather move on to another game.
