That's funny, cause if I blow my stuff up to 2x to work on it, I get all discombobulated.

I lol'd xD

Ok here you guys are. Thanks again! ..again!

I can't wait to see what you guys come up with.

...where is Meta? Sad I need him to bitch slap me and tell me my sprites suck, its the only thing that motivates me to work!
Seriously not a single crit on this ship? It's really not that good guys come on. I came here to get gang raped by pro pixel artists not head patted.

RE: Some metroid sprites - Cobalt Blue - 04-25-2012

you're not gettings any comments on it so i'd say you're doing it just fine. though i'd avoid the "rape" jokes, if you please. no one here is a "pro" pixel artist set on a quest to train you. we happen to know on the subject, and that allows us to provide constructive feedback on the subject. with that in mind, there is a percentage of self criticism you also need to develop to be able to see your own mistakes and be able to fix them on your own, and that is something no one could ever bitchslap into your mind.

you're just fine so far. just be constant on the subject and finish it, or reach a point were you can call it finished, disregard of the time it could take you.

RE: Some metroid sprites - Hoeloe - 04-25-2012

If there are no comments, it usually means you're not doing it terribly badly. It's worth continuing on and asking later to see if anything else crops up.

I find it heartening you've come here for the right reasons, and rather ironic that, so far, you need little improvement in the way of your pixels, as opposed to those who come looking for a pat on the head, and show horrific pixels (which happens far too often for my liking).

RE: Some metroid sprites - Chris2Balls [:B] - 04-25-2012

There's nothing to say on the ship because you haven't started the most important part: the shading.

RE: Some metroid sprites - Ton - 04-26-2012

What they all said. Tongue

RE: Some metroid sprites - Ailit - 05-16-2012

Long time no see, I was busy Smile
Here we go. I hadn't worked on this little project in a long time so I did some more today.
I hope I get a lot of comments, shading isn't my strength.

a bit bigger

RE: Some metroid sprites - Hoeloe - 05-16-2012

There's a fair amount of pillow shading on the main body of the ship. Don't just shade around the outlines. You did a good job on the underbelly, try using the same techniques there: shading to show shape and form.

RE: Some metroid sprites - 727 - 05-19-2012

Ah nice, these look great!

RE: Some metroid sprites - Ton - 05-20-2012

You've gotta remember that your light source is coming from above, so the top of the ship wouldn't be shaded.

RE: Some metroid sprites - Cobalt Blue - 05-20-2012

I believe that what Tonberry meant is that the lightsource is not really defined. even if it was placed in front of your object, the shadows and highlights would not generate "rings" that follow the inner shape of each block in your desing.

lets check the original ship's sprite:
the highlights and shadows were drawn in this way to help the player understand the ship's volume and shape. they do not necesary follow the outline of each part, but rather wich faces/edges would be afected by the lightsource with more intensity(where the ones would are not would cast a shadow). as it is now, there is no reason a highlights should exist on the bottom, darker side of the ship.

the way you shaded your ship makes it look flat, as if it was a beveled image on a surface.

RE: Some metroid sprites - Koopaul - 05-20-2012

Heh now that I look at the rip, even that sprite could be better!

But yeah I'm looking forward to how this will all turn out.

RE: Some metroid sprites - Ailit - 05-21-2012

Oh I get it! I'll get working on it today. I've been busy trying to set up a dev environment for the sega genesis..

RE: Some metroid sprites - Ailit - 01-20-2013

I'm baaaaaaack!

Sorry guys! Life happened but I told it to sit down and wait.

Just want to let all of you know I still work on the project, though I haven't had much time.

I'd like some comments on the new ship? I like it Smile I'd like to know what you all think.

Well.. see you soon!

RE: Some metroid sprites - Previous - 01-21-2013

Any reason to put it up here at 3x the actual size? :>

So the lightsource is in between the viewer and the ship, isn't it? That's something that usually ends up looking quite unnatural.

Have a quick partial edit to illustrate what I mean.
