They're not human; and the names that they're given relate to a star sign that their character is based around. Vriska is meant to be a (roman?) minor god of healing the poisoned and it related to Scorpions. Vriska's star sign is Scorpio.
There are human characters with more sensible names and interests, but the current plot arc isn't focusing on them.
