Yawackhary Wrote:A trade secret that I might as well tell you since you (and any other MD/Genny rippers) deserve it. I use an emulator called GensKMod which is an edited version of Gens for programming and debugging purposes, one of its features is a sprite viewer (rather similar to an OAM Viewer in Visual Boy Advance) which I use nearly all the time due to many many games have compression. If the sprites aren't there, sometimes I look at the VDP. The only problem is the possiblity of a black background, some games don't use it (like Castlevania) and others like Sonic Spinball heavily rely on it which I use other methods of ripping it.

If BAB, Dazz, Tonberry or Grooveman want to archive this tip, they are free to do so.

O_O does it work with Shining Force 1/2?

I can't see why not but if it displays a black background on the Sprite Viewer, look at the VDP to see if it has a pallete without a black background. Failing that, the only way (the Spinball way as I call it) is to dump the VDP using DebuGens (because it is broken in GensKMod) and have to open that in a tile ripper tool of your choice [Tile Layer Pro, Tile Molester, YY-CHR that sort of thing]. Luckily Debugens can also dump the TLP pallete files.

Update: I did a quick check on Shining Force 1 and it has no black background on the sprites both ingame and in battle.

omg

RE: Yawackhary's Submissions - Ton - 06-19-2008

Looksl ike Dazz is having a good time with Shining Force, though he says SHF2 is still going to be a pain to rip.

RE: Yawackhary's Submissions - Yawackhary - 06-20-2008

How many people does it take to rip a game I wonder?

Fully complete including unused balancing sprites, for a Chinese game based on Sonic 1 it sure does have some Sonic 2 references - not a hack at all. Oh and the only reason why I ripped it is because quite a few people were doing it plus it was quite quick to do. One thing is the name, in the game he is called Somari but in the actual ROM he is called Mario and since he is Mario bar two frames that uses Sonic's sneakers.

I loved that shitty game, it was shitty. Heart

RE: Yawackhary's Submissions - Ton - 06-21-2008

Ah, Somari. The king of pirated games. Great job.

Figured that the time to submit these is just right.

Sonic Drift

Sonic Drift 2
Metal Sonic
Knuckles
Fang/Nack

Anyway to cut the long story short, Sonic Drift 1 and 2 are now mostly complete (except for the Main menu on both due to no emulator supports Gear to Gear Mode required for Versus Mode except Sonic Gems Collection on PS2). Also Sonic CD was done by the old Sega Data Compressor as usual but with Raccoon Sam's edited Tile Molester actually displaying MD games right it was easier than before. I forgot one little thing, Wacky Workbench is an awful level in Sonic CD.

RE: Yawackhary's Submissions - Dazz - 06-23-2008

Excellent!

RE: Yawackhary's Submissions - Ton - 06-23-2008

Nice work!

RE: Yawackhary's Submissions - Yawackhary - 06-26-2008

Added another Genesis/Mega Drive game:

Due to photobucket being down and forgetting my info on ImageShack, I had to use TinyPic for this one and because all the methods resulted to black background, I had to do this the old fashioned way (layer removal). Hard game though.

Nice one Big Grin

The only thing that I couldn't get is the transition on the logo due to being a programming trick and not a sprite (every time I did frame step it shown the logo while doing it) but apart from that it is everything on there.

Good, are you going to do the rest of Simon's Quest?

Due to having problems with the arcade version, settled with the Amiga port which has severly less sprites (the sheet is complete since I do play the game a lot - just that the developers took some shortcuts like having one weapon sprite instead of about 4 or 5).

Apparently with a cheat, you can access some porno sprites of the opening which I'm not quite sure to rip these.
