I actually think that they decided to add Sonic later in the production than anything else. Hence they only had one pre-rendered cutscene featuring him in the story.
But yeah, I think he hates Sonic anyway. Earthbound too.

According to an interview Sonic was one of the last things added to the game. I think the game was nearly finished by that time.

If Sonic ends up being in this game, I swear I'm going to punch something; just let the franchise stinkin' die already. Why the character created with the sole purpose to rival Mario's popularity needed to appear in Mario spin-offs is beyond me, but this is just plain unforgivable, even in concept. TT

If I'm correct, Sonic isn't Mario's "arch nemesis", they're rivals.
But this wouldn't be too bad... eh... yeah, it probably would... I dunno. A cameo would be fine, but that's about it. Or... maybe you race Sonic in this supposed "Green Hill Galaxy". But playing as him in a SMG game, no.

Sonic was only Mario's main competition during the 16-bit era. I mean no one argues that Sonic is better than Marion now days. Right?

Snake only hates Sonic in Brawl because it's a reference to how hedgehogs are actually tough predators to snakes in real life. What with hedgehogs having little spines to protect them a snake can't really eat a hedgehog.
