I don't see why not, you've already taken a departure from the traditional 8-bit look and the shaded ones look very nice.

imo the 8-bit ones look waaay better. the shaded ones have too much going on in such a small space and dont really convey much depth. the 8-bit ones are simple, easy to look at, and colourful.

The shading on the shaded sprites makes them look as if they were saved as .JPG's IMO. Go with the unshaded ones all the way, and speaking about the sprites, Mario and Luigi's caps could use a little more work on them.
Right now they don't look much like the caps they are supposed to be, and even minimalist game sprites (Like the GB Mario Golf and Tennis) managed to give convincing shapes to them.
