Organizing TUGS
Id like to join; im in a bit of a funk so some good competition will lift and motivate me to CREATE!!!

Keep tiers. Introduce points. Keep eliminations: make eliminations a matter of falling below a certain quota of points (points will carry over per round). have the quota designed so that people can only get knocked out by the second or third round, assuming they have lost all rounds up until that point. points won't be about determining winner, points will be about determining who can stay in the running; once eliminations hit, wittle it down until its the classic LAST PERSON LEFT VERSUS LAST PERSON LEFT. there's something romantic about that. maybe once eliminations hit, start raising the quota of points each round as well.

I don't want, say, Jetters going up against elk or neorice first round, because it'll be effort misapplied (and we know how fucking lazy spriters are): elk or neorice probably won't put their all into the entry, and jetters' effort is either going to try too hard to go beyond their skill level and screw up, or simply not try because it won't be worth it.

Don't have a losers bracket. that's insulting and defeats the point of trying to go anywhere.

if properly introduced this method will keep the more balanced approach to groove's method while also keeping the competitive aspect and mostly addressing the flaw that 1up pointed out.
ok that sounds good

I couldn't see why they'd just throw the high-level spriters against a random contestant but, erm, I'm not sure why you used me for your example, it's almost sounds like I'm considered the worst spriter on the site and I'm not. I haven't showed off anything but a Pichu sprite yet and that isn't really showing off what I could do. I know I'm not Elk/BAB/Neorice level but I'm far from a newbie.

Seriously though yeah a loser's bracket wouldn't be a good idea, and I pretty much agree with your post about how TUGS should work.

no no, i wasn't trying to imply that, i was just looking for someone relatively inexperienced and i haven't actually looked at the spriting on this forum in a really long time so i had no idea who to use but you.
Well, that's fine I'm not offended I was simply curious.

(I'm actually trying to make a new sprite now but that blasted line art gets me every time >_<)

Anyway, quit the squabbling. I want to have some feedback on the form of this preliminary round, before the 30th. Thank you.

That looks good and all, but what do you mean with "palette recycling"?
Thanked by:
don't use a palette from either an old work of yours or another persons work.

the palette has to be made specifically for recolouring that piece.
Palette recycling means re-using a palette that you've used for an older piece, using a palette from somebody else's work, or using various palettes used on different systems (like the NES palette, the C64 palette, the GB palette, etc).

Just to clarify, is giving C+C allowed? I don't really see why it wouldn't be, besides for say, edit-taking, but I just want to make sure.

And can we have multiple silhouettes to choose from? There's a lot of entrants and I don't want to end up not knowing what to do because my ideas are too similar to others'

How exactly would one know you're recycling a pallete?

Looks pretty good. I feel like the sentence describing the palette challenge is a bit wonky. Perhaps something like, "Create a completely custom palette for this work" or "Replace the grays with your own custom palette. Do not recycle an existing palette."

Looking forward to the preliminary round. Smile

I could create a C+C thread per category, I think it could be good.
The good news is, I have six silhouettes ready. The bad news is, I think it would be fairer to judge if everybody had the same silhouette though. If many of you disagree I'll reconsider my position.

With a trained eye you can tell. A Commodore 64 palette is easy to spot because it's quite a desaturated palette, with quite a few greys. It gets more complicated with bigger palettes: If somebody were to use 24 colours from the NES's palette it'd be harder to tell, as there are 256 colours.
My point is, the palette is coming from you, you haven't decided to apply an existing palette to the greyscale sprite.
