Gau is awesome in WoB.
But as soon as you get to WoR, you'll probably ditch him for Shadow or someone really awesome.
I personally like:
Sabin because he has powerful blitz attacks that don't cost MP, and a powerful counterattack.
Cyan because his bushido ability is amazing.
Edgar because his tools are pretty good.
As for the fourth party member, probably Terra because magic/main character or Celes because she can use Runic.
Though I don't have the whole party yet. I still don't know how Setzer, etc work.
