How does that relate to Other M? 'I'm not looking forward to this. There's too much action, Samus character development, and plot instead of just adventuring.' Considering we've only had what a trailer and http://www.metroid.jp/ to go by? At least give it until e3 where we'll get more trailers and screens from the game.

I think most people I talk to about their disagreement with Wind Wakers style was that they looked like they were going to take a darker tone for the series and didn't. The promo video of Ganon vs Link, Majora's Mask's dark overtones the series in general as well as the demographic were in the early teens if not on the way and were more into the angsty faze. A lot of people never got over the blow that was Wind Waker, at least a lot of people I know.

On topic. You guys are still taking a self-perception of Samus and dissecting it as if she need's to be assessed. Maybe Samus is who she is, Samus Aran the bounty hunter who lost everything but gained power to make sure others don't have to deal with her lot in life.

Not in-game, it doesn't.
yeah but she's a videogame character. there's always this misconception that EVERY videogame character is supposed to represent the player.
it still shows her not shooting it and then recounting in fusion that she felt attached to it.

come on man, this is a pointless argument. neither of us are going to agree because I think Metroid is in well deserve of some actual characterization.
I'm going to enjoy the new Metroid game, while you probably miss out on it.
Regardless of course of what the games have been in the past and by all means what defines them and made them great in the first place (in other words, regardless of how ignorant it may be).
yeeeah. lets just homogenize everything. thing A is pretty cool so lets take this thing B and make it thing A~!

Quote: there's always this misconception that EVERY videogame character is supposed to represent the player.
yes, that is a misconception because the large majority of them completely ignore that potential and simply dive into throes of homogenized literalism. the thought never even enters the developers mind and instead they waste their time

it's nothing but wasted potential - which is why it is wonderful that there are games that actually attempt to build upon this idea. RPG's with silent protagonists evidently toy with the idea, and most of the Metroid games obviously do as well.

Quote:I'm going to enjoy the new Metroid game, while you probably miss out on it.
I never implied I wouldn't play it if I got the opportunity. Whether or not I'll enjoy it or not however is a completely different subject, and in all likelihood I probably won't.

this analogy is horrendously stupid
by all means it doesn't even work
From what little bits I've seen, it seems like it would be a pretty good game.

Now as far as a good METROID game, I'm not getting my hopes up... To me, Team Ninja developing it screams tits and Ninja Gaiden. Eh, whatever. I'll just play Super Metroid if I want a great Metroid-style game. We'll just have to wait and see.
Most of the input on Ninja Gaiden came from Itagaki, and some choice others who aren't part of Team Ninja. Samus like any other protagonist, wether or not she relates to the player is subjective. There is no connection when I play Metroid, she's mostly faceless, an inhuman construct. Stories can be narrated in many ways, one where the protagonist speaks is an interesting, welcome change for Metroid.

as for 'the throes of homogenized literalism' oh man come on.

is that bad?
How people can be so hateful of a game for a trailer is beyond me...
This has to be one of the stupidest game conversations ever. I mean when phrases like homogenized literalism comes into video game conversation you've probably taken things to far.

I think it looks cool, but not cool enough to actual make me bother to reconnect my Wii to the TV.

And well people pulling all this "what Metroid is about" and "who Samus is" out there ass. She has never spoke, and very little has really ever been said about her. Who she is has basically been made up by fans. Maybe she's a all into the flow of movements or maybe she's into shooting people in the face with missiles- we don't know.

But seriously, this conversation is way way way too deep for a game that hasn't even been playable yet.
lol
you're confusing connecting with a character as a similar character and being "connected" to something as an avatar

all subjectivity is nothing but a reaction to objectivity

Quote:oh man come on.
if that's honestly all you can say than you I can only come to the conclusion that you never actually "got" it in the first place
itt gizmonic finds deeper meaning in metroid than the creators even put into the game
i feel myself emotionally connected to the L block in tetris.

itt vipershark is just as dumb as he always is

(for one thing i am not talking about some DEEP ARTISTIC MEANING or anything like that; by all means what i'm talking about is actually pretty damn simple~!
Unfortunately, I've never played any of the Metroid Prime games, but this game is taking my interest. Perhaps this would be a good time to go and purchase the Metroid Prime Trilogy? My poor Wii is sitting in a drawer somewhere covered in wires and dust. I could use a good Nintendo game for killing some time, and bringing my Wii back to life as well.

While I liked the Metroid Primes they aren't a fair representation of the series. Try out Super Metroid or one of the Gameboy Advance ones if you want to see classic 2D Metroid gameplay.
Unfortunately, Nintendo pulled production of the Metroid Prime Trilogy, so you're going to have to either find a used copy or by them individually.
Make sure you get corruption because it's the absolute best in the prime series.
