What are you talking about? What did I do?

Apparrently you have been criting exceptionally well
I agree with this. Everyone's saying to stop editing and start making customs, which I don't really agree. Editing is a way to improve the spriting skills, principally when you don't have the customing skills yet.

Maybe not so much you as 1up, but still you're not one to sugarcoat when it is a sprite that obviously needs a lot of work.
NO IT ISN'T.

Do you get better at drawing by tracing? No. Do you get better at writing by plagiarizing? No. Just changing an original sprite to something different a little isn't going to make you a better spriter. Posting those edits here are going to make you look like an idiot. Make something original, post it here and receive crits from the few great spriters we have here.

I personally have never edited a sprite ever. I think I'm ok atm.
hey guys

my first sprites were HEAVY edits

then i tried customs once i was confident enough that I could do them

tl;dr edits are good as long as you don't show them to anyone ever and just use them as a starting point for moving to customs
shut up grooveman your edits aren't even that great. sure they're better than most people who post edits here, but that's because all they do is recolor and change 3 or 4 pixels
I must say I started off by editing. However that was only to grasp the first hurdles of spriting, so I stopped after my first few sprites.

Yet, you simply cannot achieve your full potential by editing sprites over and over again. These statements are entirely subjective based on who this is targeted at.
The point is not to determine what makes better sprites in the long-run, but to stop shoving "Do customs" down people's throats!

you=/=others

everyone has a pace of improving: some needs more time, some don't. By editing, people can see how spriting work.

But I'm talking about GOOD edits, not simple (and ugly) edits.

this is what i was trying to say

only this looks better and less retarded
1up: what? Grooveman didn't even post in this topic

lol no such thing as a good edit, gorsal
i know but i assumed he would come in eventually because EDITS BEING DISCUSSED

So since this is probably the only way to make this thread useful now since people don't seem to get it...

Mind doing it?
No, because I don't think this topic is necessary in the first place. Nobody reads stickied topics that aren't challenge threads.
You're right what was I thinking.

The only people this really applies to wouldn't do that.
Edits, no matter what, will always be edits.

the same effort you spend modifying that sprite could be easily used into learning stuff to create them into your own. the same amount of pixels you have placed over that sprite you used as a base could be easily used to create something new. even if it sucks and it barely has any sense of human anatomy, its YOUR OWN WORK, you own effort, your own mistakes and you'll learn way, waaay more by making those mistakes than just using a lifesaver sprite because you can't aford yourself to do it on your own. I have made sprite edits in the past, certainly its not a crime nor a sin, but nothing to be really proud of. but there is no way editing sprites will ever help you improve beyond a certain limit, in woich you will eventually need to move on and start doing your own stuff.

now, deniying the fact that it does take effort, time, creativity and talent to make something extraordinary from a base in a edit is as retarded as the so called pixel purism. if someone is skilled enought to create something good out of an edit it will certainly be recognized. nor like a custom stickman made in 30 seconds will be more worthy than a week-long huge sheet of perfectly shaded and created characters. thats just a dumb prejudice.

this thread, anyway, is made out of rage. i wouldn't take it seriusly.
