when I go to get a sprite I will find something like this on this page:

http://www.spriters-resource.com/gameboy.../pokefrlg/
(once you go to the link click random NPCs)

But if i save the immage ill be stuck with a big set of sprites and when i import it into rpg maker xp and choose a graphic for an event, 7 or 8 of the sprite characters will be selected for the graphic. How do i make it so that only 1 is selected like the ones that come with rpg maker xp?

Let me know if you dont understand the question.
You'll have to edit the sheet in order to make it work for RPG Maker XP. Sheets are not designed to work for anything specificly, but you can edit them in paint or any other application in order to make them work.

Ok, when I tried to edit the picture and then used it I was only able to use part of the graphic character like the top, bottom, or middle of the character.

Is it just that I made it too small?
You'd be best off asking at a RPG maker specific forum - I've no practice on the matter.

Thanks for the help. Ill try to find one.
It really depends on the RPGMaker version you're talking about. I know handle versions prior RPGMaker XP, they have specific dimensions and 4 directions (Front, Back, Left, Right) and each one got 3 frames (stopped, 'left', 'right'). But XP and onwards they got one extra posing (the 'stop' in all 4 directions, separated from the walking ones) and they keep a certain proportion. To do additional posing you need to do additional sheets... Or used to need XD
Also, usually the 0 color in the index was the alpha (transparent) one for RPGMaker, but I'm not sure if it still is. But anyway you're going to need a graphic program. And it's better check those on a RPGMaker forum too
