Full Version: Huge gaps in arcade game rips

Hi!

I came to this site to look at some awesome pixel art of arcade games, but it seems to me that there are huge gaps in the lexicon. For example Pro Gear only has a few backgrounds and almost no sprites. I wonder why this is the case? I thought there must be a lot of arcade and pixel art fans out there who are willing to contribute, and since the era of the pixel art arcade machines is gone for a long time, I thought by now we must have a nearly complete archive of all the games.

So my question is: Why is this the case? Are fewer people interested in ripping sprites than I thought? Is the process so complex that only few people have the means/energy to do it? Or is it simply not possible to do it?

Depending on the reasons, I would like to offer some help, if I can find the time. There are some games that I really like (Pro Gear for example), and I could start with that if there is some interest. It would probably help to know if someone else is working on that game already.

Edit: Okay, I started working on ProGear and I am getting an impression about why we don't have a complete archive yet. Doing a 100% tilemap of the game is going to be a lot of work, let alone doing getting tilemaps for all the games. If only there was a way to automatically assign the proper palettes...
