For me it came down to the fact there was a single sprite as opposed to lots...might seem like a strange way to rule out a submission but it was hard and I had pick on something that made X submission better than others.
Not the place to suggest a contest idea, I know, but since E3 is coming up, how about a contest E3 Related?
Basically, like the egg contest you can have multiple entries and select the one that you're most confident in. Your choices will any new revealed content from the E3 conferences of your choice. If it's something like a remastering, you can still sprite something related to it. Since E3 is next week, maybe the contest can start the week after?
I'm honestly hoping someone turns Inkling into a MUGEN character now... Splatoon has become a new interest for me.

Quality > Quantity.
Just my rule, though. All of the submissions were amazing, regardless.
Personally the simplistic style of SchAlternate's entry appeals to me the most. Great use of colors, nice style, plus a game mock up. Just was great in all aspects.
