Hi, this is the first sprite I have ever created, finished about 50 minutes ago.

Its a Pokemon fusion of Tyranitar and Typhlosion, I call it Tyraniphlosion. (NAME WIP)

This is the first sprite I have ever made and would really appreciated any criticisms.

Not to be insulting, but people generally don't care for Frankensteins. You really don't learn anything from them, except for bad habits. Try drawing something yourself. Even if it looks like crap, it'll still be better since it's your first real step on the road to being a pixel artist. And, again, don't worry about sucking; my own art was pretty bad way back in the day and I'm still far from the best, so you shouldn't worry.
Welcome Minolose, to the VG Resource. I hope you enjoy it here! Smile
Not to be rude, Blueblur, but weren't you meaning to post that reply in this thread?

To elaborate on what Kelvin said, Don't make pokemon fusions.
Also don't make sonic edits,
or megaman edits,
or recolors.

In short we don't care for simple edits like the examples listed above for the reasons kelvin just said.

Do something entirely from scratch, you're more likely to get criticism from us that will help you be a better artist.

I know it's a blunt point but coming from someone who is an art major in college take it from me; you should trust us when we give you pointers on improving and making your art look more awesome to show off, even if it's in pixel art. Maybe one day you'll even have the chance to spin us right round if you take every criticism you can get to improve your art.
That's not 'your' first sprite. Those are sprites made by a special user we call "GameFreak".

Like all of the above, try something yourself.

I completely understand what you guys are saying, that being said, as a beginner its kind of hard (at least in my experience) to get into spriting. Maybe I'm searching the wrong things but I can find any helpful guides or anything...

Do you mind maybe giving me some pointers and tips on scratching a sprite? Also maybe some tips on what to avoid doing when scratching sprites.

Thanks for the help!

my tip is to start of simple! i suggest making a sprite of kirby or jigglypuff since theyre both circles. another tip of mine is that everything you make should be handmade, meaning that there shouldnt be any uses of the circle tool/line tool UNLESS you touch up the circles/lines.

also, look at this dictionary to make yourself familiar with sprite terms: http://www.vg-resource.com/thread-25474.html
The only ever ever ever time I'd not yell at someone for using already made sprites is if they want to try shading styles and/or take flat sprites and shade them for practice. And even then still best done on own sprites.

Long story short you can benefit from both, but you'll benefit from your own sprites about 1000% more.
