I'm considering doing the impossible... spriting Diablo 2. What do you think?

Assassin:

I say impossible because the sheet above is only the dual-wielding-fist-weapon animations, and only one of the four possible weapons in each hand.

All these animations also different versions for:
One-handed-swinging weapons (with 15 different weapons and 7 different shields)
One-handed-thrusting weapons (with 9 different weapons and 7 different shields)
Two-handed-swinging weapons (with 2 different weapons)
Two-handed-thrusting weapons (with 4 different weapons)
Bow (with 4 different types)
Cross bow (with 4 different types)
Staff weapons (with 11 different types)
Hand to hand (with 7 different shields)
One-handed-fist weapons (with 4 different weapons and 7 different shields)
Two-handed-fist weapons (with 4 different weapons for each hand)

Multiply all these by
9 different helmets
3 different torsos
3 different legs
3 different right arms
3 different left arms
4 different right shoulder pads
and 4 different left shoulder pads

And this is just for the Assassin! There are 6 other player classes.

So I always wondered why there weren't any Diablo 2 sprite sheets in the world, and I guess this is why.

I ask what do you guys think because, maybe I could reduce it to layers (which may be confusing, and will need information for which layer goes on top of which for each frame of animation), or maybe just the important ones (for instance, for the assassin above, I only did two-handed-fist animations because that's typical, and special for the assassin, the other classes can't do that).

Anyway, I'm glad I got all that in writing instead of sitting in my head. Suggestions? Opinions?

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by that, but the problem you see might be with DropBox's viewer. If you download the file, you'll see that it is correct.
Wow, godspeed, sir. I eagerly await your progress. Tongue
idk anything about the game so I couldn't tell you how you should divide them. Sick
I think if you can get everything, that'd be great... I understand if you can't, of course.
Probably be best to arrange it by Class - Weapon Type, rather than put everything of one class on one sheet. It'd be a bit nuts to do that.
Ripping playable characters is crazy! I'd start with easier things like enemies and/or bosses.
So I built this awesome page that lets you choose all the options you want for your character, and then it will build and give back a nice sprite sheet for it!

BUT... it uses windows tools for extracting frames from the data files, and my server is linux [cry]

Here are some examples I did on my local box using the tool:

It's a real shame because these builds only take a few seconds for the script to build and show.

Anyway, I'll take requests. Just use the tool to make a build, then send me the link(s), and I will do it and put it up here.

Some monsters...

Very awesome! If I may:

The three Golems (Blood, Fire, Steel) are actually Necromancer summons and not enemies.
And as far as I know, The Butcher isn't in Diablo 2.
True to both.

Put the Golems wherever you like.

I put the Butcher in there because it is actually in the Diablo 2 data files, and that is where I am getting my sprites. You can leave it out if you want, either way is fine with me.
No, we'll definitely include it. It's just crazy that they didn't use him in the game.
Yeah, I put him in because apparently, he was kind of a big deal in Diablo 1 (I never played the first one).

If it is correct, maybe you should put it under Diablo 1's game sheets instead?
No, we'll have a section for the unused stuff on the site. Is there anything else that is unused?
