But when was he otherwise? Mario's never had a personality. Well not much of one. He's actually been the most expressive since Sunshine. Since then they've kept that level of emotion for Mario. When Peach get captured he looks upset, before facing Bowser he looks angry, when completing a level he looks happy.

Take a look!

Pretty much been going on in all of his games now.
It doesn't matter how expressive the animations are when the models themselves are so washed out it's difficult to focus on the characters vs. the background.
Mario's style was always different in the main games up until Sunshine, from which it started to stay the same. I've mentioned somewhere else some time ago that you cannot tell the origin of a Mario model anymore.
Model? Before Sunshine he was jagged polygons on the N64. Before then he was pixels. He was constantly evolving with the graphics of the time.

They just got to a point where Mario looked as good and accurate as he needs to be.

And then they went past that.

They've made Mario 9000% sexier.

If you'd turn them into high-poly models like that of the current Mario, they'd still be recognisable as that Mario from that game. This new M&L is a great example of that, capturing the look and feel the sprites had. A different example is Super Mario All-Stars: 4-5 different games on one cartridge, yet none of the games borrow or recycle sprites from one and other, with the exception of Lost Levels of course.
Wow this topic was left in the dust, better bump it with
INTERESTING INFO

Granted, most of what I'm about to post, most people already know.

* Upon beating the game, you will unlock a hard mode (in an Iwata Asks, they pointed out that if you aren't on the ball, you could game over in the tutorial).

* The game DOES indeed use sprites for the characters, NOT models. Hear that Ridge/Star? Theres something to look forward to.

* The game is longer and has more content than the previous games (or maybe they just meant BiS which isn't hard to believe since that game was rather short).

* There is an easy mode that activates if you keep losing in battle or constantly mess up a Bros Attack.
- Easy mode will (from what I understand) give you info on the enemies you are fighting, giving you and idea of when you should react to avoid their attacks.
- Bros Attacks will become Slow Attacks. They work the same as their normal counterpart, except time will slow down at crucial moments to help the player learn the timing.

- Easy mode still requires you to beat the enemies like normal, it just gives you some pointers (so it's not holding your hand like recent Super Guide modes).

* There will be a Boss Rush Mode.

* You can equip different types of hammers that will have different effects and uses.

Also here, have a trailer thing.

Woot! Now that you say it though you can kind of tell.

Anyway, all of this looks awesome. I love how they keep classic stuff like squished Mario and the spinning move throughout the games Big Grin
Ladies and gentlemen, I bring you proof that this will be the best M&L ever. Looks like a familiar face will be returning, one that hasn't been seen since the Superstar Saga, and one of my personal favorite characters.
This. This is officially the best thing I have seen of the entire game. The Hoohooligans were already awesome, but this tops it off.
holy shit, this game cannot come soon enough

whereas Sticker Star became less interesting the more we learned about it, this game is becoming more exciting with every bit of information I hear!
There has not been one bad M&L Game, while two seems to be the weakest one in the series none of them were bad. This however looks like it's incorporating the whole series into itself and they're doing a fantastic job of making it all fresh and vibrant and still only giving us enough information to keep it exciting and reel us in more.
