What the crap did I just read?
I don't get why some of you claim Rare had poor character design. Looking at Kosheh's post.
maybe because stick two eyes to an object = completely original character that took months to develop do not steal

nothing against it (except it looking really lazy) but saying that's great character design is plain bullshit imo
List of Banjo-Kazooie supporting cast/enemies

carrot with googly eyes
onion with googly eyes
bee with googly eyes
termite with googly eyes
fish with googly eyes
snake with googly eyes
frog with googly eyes
...
I could go on, but I think the point is clear

Rare has always had a nack for taking the simplest route when filling a field
with "content." The actual main character designs are decent, but everything
else just seems kinda lazy.
Sir, I say sir - are you saying a sunflower with large breasts is not creative?
Whoa, hold on. Most of the characters aren't really supporting. Half of them are background objects you can't even interact with. The only game I can think of from this branch of Rare with a non-generic-enemy and non-background-object character with those basic designs would be Conker's Bad Fur Day with the pitchfork and the cogs, but even in that case the characters had unique personalities and interactions with the world.

But as far as actual main and supporting character designs?

So, yeah. You can go ahead and find tiny little background world objects and choose not to acknowledge the non-generic primary characters and objects, but that's a really wrong, warped, biased, and blind point of view.

A legitimate complaint on Rare's character design would be their inability to maintain some kind of height scale, because by Banjo-Kazooie's laws, Gruntilda should be about three Bowsers tall (same with K. Rool in the original DKC games.)

Also, on gameplay: One of my favorite parts of DK64 was the massive collecting, so I guess, different strokes.
Except these are all Donkey Kong characters and not Banjo (or Conker) ones.

I really like Banjo more than DK or DKC in general but, they were extra lazy with the enemies and NPCs on the series. But that doesn't really matter much, because the game is incredible anyway and it fits.

But not calling that lazy is lie.
adding eyes is fine

but it takes no work

adding nipples to a crocodile now thats what im talking about

The whole accusation was at Rare in general, but okay Big Grin

Yeah you guys are being too general. When it it comes to the main cast, Rare always makes great designs.

I mean sure you get some crappy ones like Candy and Kiddy. EVery series has it's lousy characters.

But just look at Dixie Kong! She has an awesome design. Also the fact that they were always dressing up K. Rool in different outfits, that was clever and funny.

Kremlings and Kong generally look great.

Honestly I don't why you complain about Rare sticking eyes on things when Mario does it all the time too.
(I don't exactly like some of the Mario designs either so don't feel like DK is the 'black sheep of the family')

Well, I never played DK64 that much to give a proper opinion, so I have no idea about it. The SNES ones were good though so if you can figure out a sweet spot between adding a new dimension and retaining what made the SNES games good, then who knows.
i feel like rareware's concept sculpture studio consisted of a ten year old with about 8 dozen pairs of googly eyes
and they were forced at minimum wage to create common animals and household out of clay
shizzam: banjo kazooie cast

also dont tell me [Image: Tooty.jpg] is "clever and innovative character design"
please, convince me that tooty's design wasn't done at gunpoint or by ken lobb's five year old daughter

like tell me the last time you've seen a cartoon bear wearing all spandex
cartoon bears generally don't wear pants and when they do it tends to be overalls
Rare knew Tooty was "rubbish" as they said in an interview. That's why they never used her again. The best Banjo characters they kept and gave them even bigger roles like Mumbo Jumbo.

Same with Kiddy. They dump the lousy ones and keep the good ones. Eventually over the course of the series, you build a a cast of well liked characters.
Can somebody elaborate on what was wrong with Kiddy?

Because I like him.
