Actually, I take it that he's a splice, being another sue for the fact that he's a joint effort between Docs Light and Cossack. Ring any bells?

Aaaaanyway..

How do I correct the shading on the legs? They look out of place now because of the way it turned out (and might've screwed up on some areas). I also think I went overboard on the palette too. Hey, at least the hand issue is resolved! Big Grin

Now for Arle. I bet this one has a bit more flaws than the last one, but hopefully these two will be the ground work for both.
lack of contrast in both sprites. The hair melts with their faces, and non-existant shading.

This is the style I tried to emulate, but I knew I screwed up (was a bit concerned about the outcome on how it would look like a mess if I added extra shades to such a pallete and the sprite's main body with my experince), but I am probably gona talk it over with dragon boy to see if there's a good alternative for the game project.. but the poportions I can keep, right?
I feel like the face is really low on the head, compared to how much of a forehead the hair conveys. Does that make sense?
Yeh, I have no idea what to do with that, since the proportions are p. much based on Puyo.

However, I got this. Funny how Mega Man Legends doesn't have a proper spritan style, only sprites based on pre-existing styles. However I am having trouble with certain proportions.
A bit more contrast would be nice, but I think otherwise it looks good, if perhaps a bit too face-less for a game (lol). Still, I think it'd be funner to see you doing some reaverbots in this style.

3K, you gave me an idea. While gors DID note of the style's size being not suitable for Mega Man, however emotions can also be shown in physical gestures and quirks of the characters in Mega Man Legends, and other series as well, and does not have to require the use of facial expressions for exaggerated emotions, such as seen in the Mario & Luigi sprite style.

Plus I also wanted to have a suitable sprite style for characters that hail from the DASH series, the black sheep of the Mega Man metaseries (in which not many people not seem to like, yet Tron shows up in a bazillion crossovers).

Also, don't forget ZX's solution, as most people (notably role players on sites such as DA) often utilize this.

Speaking of which here's the reaverbot Zakobon, albiet very ugly and might require touch-ups:

This is the current version of the old sprite. How should the full idle play out, animation wise?

Keep in mind that the top one is the recent one, while the old one is in the lower left. There's also flaws with the arms I might need to have a look at.

Aside from the shading (as I can't seem to figure out how to get him to match the style of Tarus) and legs, I think the remake of the hellhound came out alright. The original is in the green box.
He needs a bigger tail, also he seems a bit dark colored.

How do I shade quadruped characters?

Also, updated Tarus. He now has a feel that he is dragging the blade (which will be prominent in his running animation), suggested by Smithy. A little fun factoid is that his name was meant to be TAUrus, but as with all spelling goofs, I went with it. His character is based off the zodiac sign of the same name, which gives an explanation as to why he is a hothead (bulls tend to have quite a temper, which I thought it would be quite fitting for him as he is a bit of a powerhouse and named after a zodiac sign).
Gaia, I'd suggest looking at photos of dogs or foxes or wolves to see how light affects them, I guess. Personally I think it would look fine without the highlight, since it's not helping much with the lighting/shading problem.
Tarus looks like he has a huge head compared to his face. You might have to move his eyes up some and shrink the top of his head down.

e: I looked a little closer and your shading's back to being messy again...

It's especially evident on tarus's um...the part of his bangs all the way at the right, that's pretty much pillowed. Just because it's touching an outline, that doesn't mean it needs to be AA'd or to have shading there. Knock that mindset off. Clean it up.

Also, what is with these huge feet? Feet with this size and shape automatically scream Mega Man to anyone who sees it, especially with these kinds of boots, and with the armor being pieced in MM-style parts...If these aren't supposed to have anything to do with MM, don't make it look like MM. Learn from other stuff. I don't want you to be stuck on one style, it's making your art suffer.
It's meant to have a chibi look, but at the same time I want to stray from the common form that's oft. drawn here. (you know, thin body, legs of a bloody gazelle, etc.) But looking at it now, I could have just tried another method, and even then that looks "eyeballed".

Even then you haven't hounded on megamariorandomnumbers for doing an already tired-out style and concept, but eh.
