His chest seems to be off centered, but that could just be me. His surfboard looks disproportional behind his leg, too.
Another pass.

Changed his chest, surfboard, and his legs. I don't really have any plans for
this guy outside of just making him, but of course I'd like him looking good,
so keep up that C&C please.
I prefered the old pants! ;-)

You have quite low contrast on the green ramp. Again, your shoulders are just weird blobs of dark-ish green. Contrast on the board might be too strong. Also, it looks weird with the rather dark outline but absolutely no defined inlines.
The shading on the legs doesn't make sense at all, seeing how they bent inwards the shouldn't be illuminated.
Previous to the rescue! All very valid points, and proof that this sprite just doesn't work.
You know, I preferred the old shorts too. this guy was literally a "hmm, what if?" sprite,
so i think I'm giving him a rest for now. I don't really have any other ideas at the moment,
so I may come back to him. I guess that maybe the world is quite ready for Frankensurfer yet. Smile
I feel that while the surfer element came through in the design, the Frankenstein's monster element wasn't clearly communicated. It could've just as easily been called geriatric martian surfer. Frankenstein's monster is large and should have a bit more bulk to him. It could also be beneficial to the design to show stitching or scars to drive home the idea that he's been cobbled together from pieces of various different corpses. You could perhaps even color the different stitched together body parts different colors. Just something to consider whenever you do return to Frankensurfer as it's certainly a cool character concept.

I made this

I don't really have any asperations with this one, I was just kind of
doodling. I know the anatomy is wonked, I started with the popeye
look at first and this is where I ended up. The formost arm (the right one),
however, I don't seem able to get that elbow bend right.

C&C as always.
So.. I've been pondering on whether or not I want to try my hand at making a character for TFR..

My problem is that my ref, Greenguin, is a little.. round, I guess? I've tried tinkering with him, but
he just doesn't translate into a fighting game character. He's short, his limbs are tiny, he waddles,
Its just embarrassing overall.

So I started thinking, maybe I could make a character based on greenguin, but have the character
have human attributes? This is what i came up with.

It's supposed to be a guy wearing a Greenguin costume, like a mascot. the line across the head
is supposed to be the string that holds his "beak" in place. I would say the guy is me, but honestly,
I'm not that thin. Wink

Is this a dumb idea? would anyone even want to play as this guy? Should i just scrap this idea right now
before I get to far into it?

Honest C&C please, as if I even need to ask. Smile
Well, there are always solutions, by giving him a weapon (a fish blade), that could give him an extra reach. Plus if I remember the Happy Feet penguins and the Madagascar Penguins (AND the Pebble and the Penguin penguins) were very mobile despite poportions. There's also Penguinmon from Digimon, a penguin fit for battle.

In this case, you can most likely use him as an assist, but as for the stance he looks like he's twisted his foot in one of the legs.
You know Gaia, the prinny route had occurred to me, and I did try using some of the prinny features
on an earlier attempt.

Yeah.. I didn't like how it turned out. my ref just seems too round to have actual legs, I think.
He's weird looking, and It still didn't solve his reach issue. If only I had taken TFR into real
consideration when I first made him...
There's ALWAYS a solution to an animal's limitation, say.. A snail. Although snails IRL are incapable of fighting, a cartoon snail most likely can. I'll most likely have an example of how this works in the main topic.

One last thing, there is no "limit" in TFR, as it's a cartoonish fighting game in the first place.
Like I already said, instead of waddling, he could slide around as if he was moving on ice. He's a penguin after all and TFR is rather cartoonisch. You can easily make is flaps grow in size while slapping, have him open his mouth extremely wide in a bite attack and all that. Let his fishtie come alive in one move. Think creative and your original Greenguin can fit in just fine.
While trying to figure out a good method of making my ref work, I got sidetracked
and started doodling. Here is a small dump of the doodles.

They are all wip. I really should keep more progress versions to look back on, but
i tend to just keep spriting on top of the sprite I'm currently working on.

c&c appreciated.
The whiteshirt's eye looks weird with that orange line. The armoured one's armour needs stronger contrast - metal has really strong contrasts - and the armour appears kinda thin and wonky.
The sunglasses' nose should be moved one pixel to the right so it faces in the same direction as his... face.

The white-shirted guy looks like he has a shoulder but no elbows. Either his arms are too stiff, or they're just too short.
