When I turned on my computer yesterday Relevant knowledge crashed three times and then the my documents folder opened. I had no start bar, no icons and no wallpaper. I also got a pop up at random that looked similar to this:

[ sfdsfd______(x) ]

I have had to reinstall windows but I would still like to know specifically what happened. The operating system is windows 7 ultimate.
I think it was a virus or some kind of malware :/
Yeah, it was definitely some kind of malware. To prevent that kind of stuff in the future, you could try getting a good script blocker or something for your web browser to use on sites you don't trust, but make sure you have a decent anti virus as well.
It got passed avast pretty easily. Any recommendations for a script blocker?
If you're using Fire Fox, NoScript will do the trick.
