knowing anatomy is always a plus. It doesn't even need to be from books; just pose yourself in the mirror or see other people's movements to get the idea; try finding proportion 'thingies' in your body (the hand can cover the face, the arms end in almost the same height as the crotch, etc). You need to observe.
also as Metaru said, do something small. A man, a car, or even something like my pixel sigs. It's easier to manage a small piece than a big one.
