I think they were kinda lazy since they just used the in-game mother 3 game sprites...

... That's not really being lazy if you ask me, since they wanted to make it be in style, easiest way is to just use the style.
Otherwise, you could say they got lazy and make any new artwork for the stickers.

You have to extract the textures from the pac, pcs, or brres file using Smash Box or something similar.
