Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 2 / 3 - Unknown model format
#1
Shocked
Hi. I'd like to start up an effort to rip skinned/rigged character models with textures from the Budokai Tenkaichi 2 and 3 games and upload them on TMR. This has been bugging me for years.

So I got the AFS files from the ISO and decided to check it out. The models are in XXUS1.afs, so I extracted the file called "King_C" (King Cold, my favourite character) and decided to do a little digging in his file that AFSExplorer spit out.

First things first, there's no file extension on this thing. It's about 300-something KB. I know for a fact his model, bones and textures are in there. I mean, the xxxUS2.AFS has sounds, and some appear to be missing, even, such as the fight grunts. Those files must be in another unknown format, or just compressed. And the other file, xxxUS0.afs, appears to be the boot texture and some metadata. Secondly, in HxD, there's no information at all on the internal formats of the bones or mesh. So I'm taking a shot here and assuming that the King_C file is compressed. After all, there's no way that the filesize can be that low. I think it oughta be about 700KB or up.

You might be telling me: "Yo, Tabuu! Rip them via 3DRipper or whatever." That's not my goal. I want them extracted/converted with their native filenames and all. I also want the skins and rigs. My goals are #1 to upload them on here, and #2 to get King Cold to use him in Smash Wii U mods.

I wouldn't hate being able to get effects such as energy waves and lightning textures too.

I've uploaded King_C for hackers to check out. I'd upload the AFS archive, but a) that's relatively easy to get, b) I don't the mods would like that, and c) it's over a GB, so it won't let me put it unless I put it in my Mediafire.

I'd really appreciate having this format cracked and extracted from. Tenkaichi 3 especially is a DBZ fan's treasure trove of decently made models.

Thanks for reading! =)

The sample you posted contains no model data. You have to find a character table online in order to find the correct location of the characters, I don't remember where. The models aren't compressed either, I in fact even started a script a while ago to study ps2 formats, but like most of my projects, is somewhat incomplete. So far I think I only had meshes and uv's imported. If you just want to pick files randomly from the afs file, you'll know you have a character model if you search for "pmdl" and come up with a result.

...so what on Earth did I dig out? Very Sad

So yeah, I'll look further.

EDIT: I think I found a PMDL file in this thing I attached here. It doesn't help that I have NO idea what to look for, and ZERO skill in reverse-engineering.

Bump.

So has anyone found anything in my sample? I'm just getting a little curious. Smile

I have a couple of scripts here that could be used to continue research. How the meshes are built are pretty straight forward but I can't figure out the bone hierarchy and skinning. Your sample is what I believe is an archive, but it does contain mesh information. Just cut the file until you reach the pmdl header and the script should work fine.

I'll try it. Thanks for your time.

EDIT: It worked. The file I had was Arale.

Hey, do you think you can get the textures from the files as well? Or are they contained somewhere else?

I know this is late by yeeears, but about your question (incase anybody runs into this thread in the future) Yes you can inside the games model unks for example "モデ・1426"
or as ASF Explorer calls it "ff.ff" (because I guess it can't read japanese since "モデ" is basically "Model") that is Son Goku's costume 4. each costume unk have the model peices and textures from what I extracted. NotSoRed I will be happy to help you out incase your still curious and anybody else that runs into this in the future.
