Annoying Things People Say/Do
#61
Elitists bother the hell out of me.

They think they're so much better because they were taught differently, or because they do something differently, or because there's a "right" way to do or learn something. JESUS CHRIST! Even better when they try to pass it off as "discriminating incompetence is both advantageous and necessary". While I agree, it's still to be done only under certain scenarios.

I've seen a few people that really dislike these programming languages and tools that are designed for beginners to learn coding. These people clearly don't understand how beginners think, especially kids. They learn best with shit over-simplified and visualized. That's not to say that these tools and languages are sub-optimal. But, to go so far as saying that any exposure or even dedication to this makes these programmers and potential programmers incompetent...EXCUSE ME? There are just too many other factors that go into this.

In essence, programming is just writing a task list, for a computer, and finding the most efficient or effective way of writing it (including re-writing it if necessary), and sometimes with very little to work with. From what I understand, anyone capable of doing this to the best of their capabilities, and who strives to improve, is a competent programmer. I've seen some pretty good stuff made using tools, languages, or techniques that are often considered bad, impractical, or obsolete. So, it really pisses me off when someone acts like these people know nothing, or were poorly trained, or have been compromised in some way.

I don't care if they use Basic, Visual Basic, Batch, ActionScript, Java, Javascript, Python, Fim++, C, Assembly, or any of the other countless languages. I don't care what tools they use to develop their program/game, either. What matters is how much effort they put in, what they've learned, how well it works, if they challenged themselves to make it, etc...

Programming, similar to art is not about the resources or tools used to create the piece, it's how they're used.
If I had a blue ribbon to award between an amazing sculpture made out of literal shit, a gold-rimmed, diamond-encrusted cube of marble, or a poorly-forged statue of bronze; I would probably give that ribbon to the statue made of shit. Why? The cube was made of high-grade materials, but the artistic quality of it is virtually non-existent. The bronze statue was a good effort, but clearly something went wrong during its creation. The crappy sculpture smells bad, makes me want to vomit, and is almost certainly a health hazard, but the craftsmanship shows much more clearly in it, as opposed to the two artists who had more traditional and professional materials to work with, and failed to deliver.
If I could, the statue would get second place, and the cube might bot get placed at all, but receive a comment about being an fancy-looking, expensive, paperweight.

Back to the topic of programming, I'd rather play a simple and stable text-based game, written in Batch, than a crappy, boring, unstable, laggy game, with top-self graphics and sound effects, written in C++

//end rant

tl;dr:
damn elitists think they're better than everyone else because they do or were taught differently than others... jerks

When people don't "gg" or an equivalent at the end of a match. Its just manners.

I do unless it's a match where all my team left me or a match has so much bullshit it's not even fun. Which is often, but hey. That only applies to one game I play thus far, so.

Feels like I mentioned this somewhere, already, but on the subject of games and/or teamwork.

People who cheat or throw the game, and THEN use "It's just a game, don't be mad bro" as an excuse to JUSTIFY what they've done. Irritating!

In real life: When people call my name but they draw it out with an A sound

like when my WV family with their accent goes like "Lindsaaaaaay"

I hate it so fking much oh my God. My name has an E not an A. :I

Definitely doesn't help I don't like my name very much to begin with.

On the internet: When people call me "Jetters". Like, just that. I'm fine with Mighty, MJ, Mighty Jetters, or my real name (or mostly whatever nickname you have for me), but for some reason I just despise being called "Jetters". I get it's part of my name, but it's just so irritating. It's kind of like being called "tin" when your name is "Martin".

yeah...
having that kind of issue in a few places.
Quite a few of my names that I either like pronounced whole, or specific sections used individually.

As for IRL...
Had a few people when I was at school use my last name... umm, I don't really like to be referred to exclusively by that. That goes double for my middle name. Not so much I disrespect or hate those names, it's just I don't primarily associate myself with them at all.

I was the same way back in high school, although it's a bit different since they would usually follow with "that kills people!" to reference Llamas with Hats.

I eventually got used to it, and even use it as my tag during Smash Bros tournaments (Kaaaaarl).

Although I've been hearing more The Walking Dead references recently, which can be more annoying.

I don't seem to get annoyed by things online. Many people seem to be annoyed by new members who have trouble fitting in. They never bother me.

The only thing that really irks me is when someone is being a jerk to someone else. Nothing pushes my buttons more than someone be being a dick.

As for real life? A lot things annoy me. But they are usually food related. Like, people chewing too loudly. Or people licking their fingers. Bleh.

When people assume I hate gays just because I don't agree with their lifestyle.

I mean, come on, they're STILL people. It's not like I want to go out and make their lives a living nightmare. It's not like I'm sinless either (I can attest that I've been a thief, a liar, and neglectful among other things). >>

One of my sisters is gay and I have pleasant conversations with her.

I can tell you right now calling homosexuality a "lifestyle" will get you plenty of flack.

I can pray for any of you, if you'd like.

(Also, no, I'm not ignoring you. I know I will; it's just that I have just a right to my opinion as anyone else on this forum or in the world for that matter. Also, no, I'm not trying to be snide about it.)

When people assume I hate Christians just because I don't play along with their fantasy.

I mean, come on, they're STILL people. It's not like I want to go out and make their lives a living nightmare. It's not like I'm completely sane either (I can attest that I've been a stoner, listened to vaporwave, and been diagnosed with mental illnesses among other things). >>

One of my parents is Christian and I have pleasant conversations with him.

Sorry for jumping on the bandwagon here, but I'm kinda echoing what Helmo here said.

(12-28-2015, 11:31 PM)Helmo Wrote: I can tell you right now calling homosexuality a "lifestyle" will get you plenty of flack.

There's a lot of gay people who don't necessarily live out the "gay lifestyle" - I mean, there's straight men who lived out the 'gay' lifestyle too for awhile some time back, with "metrosexuality" being a thing. That's fallen by the wayside since and gone the complete opposite with "lumbersexual" being a thing now. But you can be gay and change literally nothing about your life except for who you're in love with...because it's not a lifestyle. It's your sexual orientation. It's who you're intimately attracted to.

I kinda get what you're saying though; you wouldn't care whether your sister married a rubber duck or the Eiffel Tower, but overall you're not a fan of the choices that she sometimes makes. She also just happens to like people of the same sex. Don't worry - that's how a lot of people feel, including myself. Some of my gay friends make a lot of risky choices and it makes being that pal on the sidelines a little hard. :/

though...
(12-29-2015, 12:38 AM)SmithyGCN Wrote: I can pray for any of you, if you'd like.

this kinda makes it sound like the common "homosexuality is a sin" hivemind some people hold. :/ If you put yourself in your sister's shoes for a second, and my brother told me "I know you're gay, which is fine, there's nothing wrong with that. You're still a great person and you'll always be my sister. I'll pray for you tonight if you want,"
I might interpret that as like...my brother, while tolerating my homosexuality, is simultaneously telling me that I shouldn't love who I want to as it goes against his beliefs, and is trying to 'pray' the gay out of me, which...is kind of a cold standpoint honestly. :/

I mean, if your gay friends are suddenly now shooting up heroin because of the lifestyle change they made, YES that's dangerous and I'd be praying around the clock! But that's also not a lifestyle change tied into their sexual orientation: that's a faulty choice they made by choosing to mingle with the wrong people who they might've been introduced to by their significant other. But a heterosexual guy can hook up with the wrong crowd if their girlfriend's a closet junkie, too, so...

But I know you've got good intentions: You don't want your gay friends to make dangerous choices, and you're willing to pray for them that they make safe choices that don't threaten their lives or well-being.

It also seems like kind of a slippery slope by assuming "all gay people lead dangerous lives" because people will interpret this as you exercising binary thinking: that you believe that people are either GAY, WILD AND PROMISCUOUS (the stereotype) or STRAIGHT, CIVIL AND RESERVED (you). When in reality, it's not like that. There are incredibly GAY, CIVIL AND RESERVED people too...and as a matter of fact, the broad majority of them are. There are gay men who don't wear pompadours nor talk flamboyantly (and who would be otherwise doomed to a career of hairdressing)

which...I'll argue also is kind of a problem now too, but that's a discussion for another time lol (it's really not huge: it's just the caveats of social media, including internet forums I guess)

You ever try to work with someone to help them do something, but they never specify the exact thing they need you to do? It happens surprisingly often for me.
