Melee for me. Its graphics aren't too great, but the gameplay is just so solid.

Brawl does look decent, but I just hate how dull the character textures are, alongside some of the voices. I'm glad Sm4sh at least stepped away from the former.

EDIT: for me, Project M is my all-time favorite Smash. Especially since Brawl is easily(ish) moddable, particularly for textures/models/voices/models. Cute

Melee for Falcon.
Brawl for Snake.

This is a tough one. I'm gonna go Melee because that's what I've played more of.

Project: M > Melee > SSB64 = Sm4sh > Brawl

I don't rate in terms of content such as more fighters, stages, single player campaigns, or items. I rate in terms of the core gameplay engine.

Melee is fast, heavy, momentum physics based, has existent hitstun, and creativity in it's movement and combo game; its exciting to spectate. The downside is that Fox and Falco have a single frame gimp & combo attack, and Sheik effectively negates and secludes half of the entire cast with an unfair chaingrab autocombo; the game is also noticeably unpolished, having been made in around 13 months. Brawl is extraordinarily slow, floaty, campy, and feels uncomfortably sticky in comparison; defensive options are so strong and prevalent that its a pain to watch. There are no combos or aggressive approaches, which saps the fun factor even further. FYI for people who don't believe Brawl has abusive bugs and oversights usable in competitive play, you'd be dead wrong. There's some really jank shit that goes on in Brawl, inescapable things that don't even make sense and can lead to KO's. Someone who plays casual and doesn't actually try at the game will more likely than not enjoy Brawl more for it's pacing (which is questionable) and extra features; most of them having not actually played Melee in the competitive scene will obviously have no interest in it.

Have fun losing thousands in tourney money because you tripped, lol.

Project: M is Melee with more balance and all the bugs have been polished up, with previous mechanics now being intentional and balanced around. Its the ideal Smash title that can be legitimately competitive and casual. So... I choose Project: M.



I'm not sure asking for this comparison will end well though, OP.

Smash 4 = Melee > SSB64 > Brawl.

Not counting Project M on this one for the sole fact it's not an official Smash Game, but a heavy mod. I do acknowledge it as a game of it's own however I see no reason why it needs to be included on this particular list.

Melee was a vast improvement to what Super Smash Bros for the Nintendo 64 did. I think everyone can agree on that. However it's not really accessible to everyone given that so much meta game could come out of it. Brawl could have been that answer but it came up with too many gimmicks that could get involved in game play, such as tripping.

I think another reason why Brawl should be knocked to the bottom of the list is because, as a game it tried too hard on what it's not meant to be. Sure you had classic mode, multiplayer mode, break the targets, you know pretty typical smash bros stuff. But then comes the subspace emissary which, was a mess of it's own for a lot of the wrong reasons in a fighting game, in fact it felt like a massive crossover on a kirby game that has a mediocre story. It kind of killed the meta game of it and frankly the only people who could play it were those who were either used to the original smash and didn't like melee as much, or they were new to the smash games.

I think Smash 4 deserves an equal spot as Melee does because it felt like an improvement from brawl and puts it just on the same tier as Melee, it sped up the game play closer to melee, brought back some things that were missing from brawl, and it expanded the gameplay to the point where if you wanted to have a lot of fun with it, Custom Fighters could potentially bring a new level of game play in smash tournaments. However this one does have flaws of it's own to the point where it's still on that same level as Melee because of missing things from melee and brawl for things like items or certain modes. And if you really wanted to enjoy super smash bros 4 at it's fullest you'd have to play both versions, which makes it somewhat of a pain in the ass.

anywhooooo, i pick melee over brawl. i dont get how you guys dont like the art style, but i thinks its kinda appealing. in a way, it has a bit more realism than brawl, except without the gritty shading. the style clashing wasnt all that noticeable, as some characters were changed a bit to match the style melee was going for. the gameplay for melee is also an astounding feature. whenever i play this damn game, i feel like i have so much control over everything. if want to do a certain attack at a specific time, the attack comes out quick and its responsive.

brawl was ok when it came out, but when it evolved as a "competitive" game, it pretty much became "meta knight: the game." subspace was good when i first played it. it was the easiest way to get all the characters. however, there isnt any replay value for subspace. its only good for a first time thing. the gameplay for brawl is veeeerrry slow. input was slow and the characters felt like they were in space. while ive had some fun times with brawl, i dont think ill ever go back to it.

also, screw you nerds who picked 64/project m/smash 4!! those games arent the options! >:(

You all can blurt out all the pro meta game jargon and lingo you want, I will never be able to enjoy Melee.

It is a game that punishes way too much, without enough visual feedback (therefore lacking power) and to top it off it's ugly in visuals and animation. I don't mind a slower paced game where I know what the fuck is going on and don't end a match with -20 score all the damn fucking time

Harder isn't better when you can't even get to do anything in the game - See Contra Hard Corps.

What's this visual nonsense you keep going on about; its a game developed in 2000. I don't understand what you mean about moves lacking power, I honestly hope you realize most of the veterans' attacks were recycled right into its successors.

At regular level of play, you not realizing what's going on just sounds like bullshit. Pretty sure back in 2001 no one had a problem with how it played at a casual level. Enjoying Brawl over Melee doesn't make someone a casual player, both of them can be played that way. You are way more than exaggerating how "hard" Melee is, there is hardly a difference of 'difficulty' in Melee when you compare it to Brawl besides recovering back to the stage (for reasons like gravity and no ledge snapping), the only difference being that the former has a higher achievable skill cieling.

To top it off, I could honestly give less than a damn if you enjoy it by the way. Its a topic to discuss games and you just chimed in with a single word post, an opinion like that isn't worth a second look if it had to get one.

There is no need to get all hurt yourself, you seem to be overly defensive over things you like.

Let me put it that way: I have an opinion. I like game X and you like game Y. There are many reasons why you prefer Y and why I prefer X. It's all a matter of preference. If I don't like eating bugs, you can't force me to eat it despite all the proteins and stuff it has. It's easy like that.

Also the second comment was not even directed just at you at all, I still don't know why you tend to get all hurt by opinions rendered with pixels in your monitor, written by someone you don't even know irl and doesn't even live in the same country as you. Relax man, I said what I preferred and why I preferred it. I'm not stomping your sand castle at all.

Your post was more of "why are you offended" than the questions I asked being answered though. This is the third time you've talked about "moves lacking power" and "being too punishing". I'm not offended that you disagree with what I like, I'm offended that the point of the topic is to directly avoid one word posts and that you should probably provide a bit more detail about your statements so some discussion can take place or that your post can be understood.


The last part about pixels and all that jazz is especially like YouTube comments I've seen of people avoiding the point. Please clarify dude
