Key's Thread for Showing Off My Art Things
#76
It is an improvement for sure! I would try to keep an eye on foot spacing though; it looks as though her heel is just brushing in front of the other foot when walking and it gives me the feeling like she could step on her own foot really easily. In other words, the back foot should either a) go back and maybe be pointed downward toward the ground a bit more or b) be shifted over to the side and/or back more so it would be more concealed by/farther from the other foot.

I know that was long and no doubt confusing so here's a quick and crude edit...

...Which is what I attempted to do but then discovered an issue where her legs are way too short compared to her torso:

I tried to place her back leg more where it should be, but this creates problems when drawing her legs in proper perspective -- as you can see (in yellow), her back leg becomes a weird stub where she has almost no space for a proper leg, if that makes sense. Her torso should be shorter (or legs longer) to allow for adequate leg space. I also shifted her eye a bit more to the left to be more in-line with the overall perspective. Same goes for the arm -- I feel it would be a bit more behind her considering not only the perspective but the fact that it is in a rather limp position.

Hope that all made sense @___@

The character's drawn in a chibi SD style. When you have that little real estate to work with, you can do that, and it just works. When you make the character normal proportions, though, it...doesn't quite work out the same.

I see where you were trying to go with it though. What Quirby's trying to say is that if you're going to do that, you need to draw the strand of hair to compensate.

Like the fanart above, I'd suggest (if you decide to revisit it) trying to draw that strand of hair that's currently covering her eye to instead rest on her forehead, and then enlarge the next tuft of hair (which covers where her ear would be) so it rests over the eye and achieves the effect you're looking to go with with Alte.

It has nothing to do with whether or not it's chibi. Normal proportion anime stuff obscures eyes all the time when they're hidden in the shade of their hair. They will literally just not draw the eye even if you're realistically supposed to at least see some of it.

If you're going to criticize my art please at least do it in a way that's constructive. Tell me about the anatomy, the posing, the background, the coloring or shading, like MJ does. I really don't find it helpful when I have to read several posts about this one little detail that I did intentionally in order to replicate a common trend with the character.

I appreciate the feedback regardless.

Thing is though is that it doesn't work unless she shortens the torso to acommodate for how short the legs are.

Jetters is right, even a deformed style such as chibi has actually very definite proportions. Shortening limbs arbitrarily does not mean shit, as exemplified here:

Consider thoe body sketches. A is the 'default' realistic proportion (kind of), and the rest are derivatives. B and C are popular-ish size for chibis (B is Nendoroid-esque and C is for all purpose anime doodle Keychain is roughly using). Both B and C scale down the body considerably but they have a logic behind them: the limbs will also scale down not only directly, but also exponantially.

For example D is the B's body and C's legs, and that is really unusual. Equally, F is just A with shorter limbs (as Kosheh said, but it really doesn't work). And G is A, but the body scaled down proportionally (not exponentially) to the size of C, which is also uneasy.

The whole point of chibi is to make it cute, and thus the proportion is reduced to infant sizes (a baby/yound child will have shorter limbs with small hands/feet, with stouter bodies and big eyes in comparision to their skulls. When we grow up, the skulls get bigger (thus making our eyes look smaller - our eyes never increase in size as we grow up), and our limbs also get longer, braking the 'cute' aspect babies have.

tl;dr it's not just smaller body, there are many things to consider when drawing chibi. I hope this was informative!

I'll keep the feedback in mind for the next picture. It would require more work to go back and fix the picture than to just draw sometihng new haha

Thanks so much guys

/sighs

First of all, I humbly apologize to everyone - MJ, Key, Gors - for making such a halfassed reply.

I wasn't referring to the anatomy of the character at all. You two are both completely right about character proportions, and I'll give you that! Sorry I didn't choose the right words and my criticism came off harsher than it should have been. Maybe I shouldn't post when I have a splitting headache.

I...was actually referring to how Alte's hair is covering her eye, and repeating Quirby's point about how there's just no eye drawn.

Since the character's deformed in SD and there's little "real estate" as I was saying, drawing enough hair to cover the eye works. Also, most art gets away with it if a significant part of the eye is covered by hair falling on the face.

Since I assume you're not trying to draw her like she's presented in 100% Orange Juice (Super SD) and you're trying to draw her more....anime, here's another example. This character's eye is obscured mostly by her hair.

So yeah, when there's that little of the eye that would have to be drawn - to the point where it's a waste of time to bother sketching out the very edge of the character's anime eyelids and figuring out how exactly to properly color the sclera, then you can get away with it.

Key's referring to the fact that even in the game's official artwork, the character's eye is obscured by hair, so the eye "just isn't drawn" - but the eye is covered up by juuuust enough hair in this case. That's how the character is illustrated in the game DLC's title card.

What I'm arguing, however, is that she's when drawn not-SD like in 100% Orange Juice - like her appearance in SORA (the game in which she originates from), the artist obscures Alte's eye in such a way with her hair in that she still has an eye - it's just really covered by hair.
This is what I've been trying to say!!
Without beating around the bush here, because I have no other way to put it: if the character's artwork typically doesn't show the hair covering her eye, this doesn't mean she doesn't have an eye.
(I know that sounds really condescending and rude, but like...don't read it like that. That's not how I mean it at all)

Key's illustration, however, has the hair sitting on her face in such a way that the eye wouldn't be obscured (I'm confused, however by the way it's being phrased by Key - is the eye meant to be obscured or not here?)
I pointed this out and was trying to say that she may want to consider redrawing the character's hair to reflect this - or, looking at it now, you may want to draw the eye under the hair if you don't want to change the hair.

I'm sorry my criticism came off really terribly in the first place - looking back, I made it sound more like a nitpick, but really what Quirby and I were trying to point out was an issue with the character's face, and overall anatomy.
And I'm sorry if the thing I'm pointing out is still not making sense

...actually, now that I look at it after typing up that response

[Image: header.jpg?t=1439267640] [Image: latest?cb=20150811020849]
I just noticed that they're flip-flopping around her hair tuft all willy-nilly so it's not really clear which side of her face it is, either LOL

I really hope they don't just flip the image in SORA, because that just makes things really confusing
though I'm fairly sure you have the obscured eye on the right side (her left [our right])

Yeah I just went with the card. They just flip the sprites in-game.

The only reason I posted the store page for reference is because I was on my phone and it was dying so I had to be quick.

The exception to that eye rule would be Squigly from Skullgirls. She actually doesn't have an eye under her hair.
