NEED BIG HELP!
#1
Ok, so i've decided to rip character models from Baten Kaitos, and Baten Kaitos: Origins. They are gamecube ISO's and they run just fine with Dolphin. I use Dolphin to extract the files, but every file that is extracted has NO extension... it just says FILE when u click on it in it's folder. From what i have seen and read about in forums about ripping from games is that some of these files are textures, some are sound files, some are models. So having no extension makes them 100% worthless... I need to know how to show the extensions! I've looked online and i cant find anything on the subject... i just have normal ol' windows 7 ultimate 64bit. I feel like i shouldn't be the only one with this problem, i mean, someone has had to have come across this before! Please Help!

An extension is simply part of the filename, it doesn't affect the actual file in any way. They help with figuring out the file type, true, but that's about all. You don't need an extension for a file to be useful.

I can try and figure out their file type in a hex editor, if you could upload a couple of these files I'd be glad to take a look at them.

Well i would need to know the file type to know if i an even us it with BMDviewer2, or rarcdump, or any of those, i've tried using it with rarcdump and it just creates an empty folder, assumingly because they arent rarc files im stickin in there, but i wouldn't know cuz there are NO extensions... Anyway, here are some of the ones i extracted, i tried to get a variety of them, even tho they all look the same Tongue

When extracting from Dolphin, you NEED to include the extension when saving the file. For instance, I want to extract a file called "chara1.brres". When I right-click it and choose "Extract File", I give it the .brres extension.

Thats the problem, none of the files have extensions to begin with, all the files in the ISO are extensionless, they all just say "FILE_#####" the #'s being random numbers, when i extract, under "save as file type" it just says "all files" and there is nothing else listed in the drop-down

Maybe i should just post a request for the models... i did just reach 20 posts today, so i can do requests. I really wanted to contribute to the models-resource, but i just plain cant if my computer is going to make it this difficult for me, Sick especially since i've never done this before Blank

Thats because

YOU NEED TO ADD THE EXTENSION YOURSELF

AFTER YOU GIVE IT A FILE NAME, ADD A "." WITHOUT QUOTATIONS, AFTER THE "." TYPE IN WHAT EXTENSION IT IS.

It's not hard.

uh, kat

that's the problem to begin with
if it's not the file he thinks it is, what's the file extension it's supposed to be

that's like saying "you're a moron, your 'daily reports' file could possibly be an excel XLS. it's called DAILY REPORTS", then brainstorming what 10 different filetypes it could be just from the name only to find out it opens only in OpenOffice Impress (*.otp)

going off what Kat said, I suppose you could just name the file different things willy nilly, but i'm not sure what that'd accomplish because the end result would still be the file spitting out garbage with the wrong type :I

Well you can rename and change the extension after you've already made the file too.

Just keep experimenting and if it is no value, then google it.

This also says that he isn't physically typing the extension

Well i guess i could try typing all kinds of different extensions, but this is a wierd 3rd party game, so it might not even use the common types of files, like zelda and mario games do. And then there's the fact that there are approximately 1600 files per ISO, so that would take a very long time to finish, and thats if i knew for sure the correct extension... I tried using File-recognizer tools, like trID and exiftool, but the files i am trying to find are just not common enough to be identified

Does anyone think they might be able to take a look at the ISO themselves and maybe tell me what the file extensions are?? you can get the ISO from emuparadise, they're Baten Kaitos and Baten Kaitos Origins- i would appreciate it if someone could just take a look at the files and tell me the correct exensions! Anything could help at this point

Oh I'm sorry! I kind of forgot about this.

I took a look at the files you uploaded, and I'm afraid I can't find out much. I only found headers in 3 of the files: FILE_70004F8B, FILE_5000406F, and FILE_50004092. The first seems to be a "CAF" file, and the other two seem to be "CSL" files. Unfortunately I don't know what these formats are and can't find any info on them.

Sorry I can't do more, but hopefully this helps somewhat!

Thats totally fine! Finding out what kind of files these are was my goal the whole time, even if they arent a common type of file, just knowing helps 100%! I'll try and find out more on my own, but thanks so much for the help!
