La-Mulana
#1
Sorry for how little I've been ripping lately. It isn't that the machine stopped working, but more that the machine is running out of the good quality resources that it worked on. I'm quickly running out of good games to rip and I'm taking more time looking for good games than I am actually ripping them. That being said, La-Mulana!

La-Mulana is a great game by the NIGORO Team that is absolutely free on the PC with a feel of absolutely nostalgic, retro styled graphics. There's a remake currently being made for the Wii with better graphics and music, so check it out if you like Metroidvania games made by independent authors. If you do try it, though, keep in mind that this game is unholy amounts of hard and will utterly destroy you if you don't know what you're doing. The game's retro graphics and great soundtrack will keep you playing though.

Anyway, I guess I'm off to find another game to rip; I hope that doesn't take TOO long!

Good rips, can't complain!

I find it odd that the black backgrounds are segmented like that though. What's up with that?

It's to simulate the limitations of the retro games where only a certain amount of colors could be included in a sprite's palette. With more colors they have to trade off their transparency color, so you get black blocks around the sprite, though usually it isn't all that noticeable against the backgrounds. Since in La-Mulana it's a specific part of the sprite, I didn't remove it.

What the sodwallop? Isn't La-Mulana a Multimedia Fusion game? How in the world did you manage to rip from it properly? If you can do that, would you consider ripping from Noitu Love and Legend of Princess? They've been considered before (by myself too) but no one has really acted on them. I could buy you a copy of Noitu Love 2 if you're able to rip from Fusion Games.

Well honestly La-Mulana was a fairly easy rip because most of the sprites were already stored in a folder like so:

So it was mostly a matter of sorting a bunch of files like that out, separating the sprites from each other, and then palette swapping them with images that I take from screens shots from the game (whenever I opened the files in MSPaint or Photoshop the colors would corrupt for some reason). If other Multimedia Fusion games are like this then I don't see why they wouldn't be incredibly easy to rip, but I'm assuming that they're not, so I'll try giving some games a look and see how likely it would be that I'm able to rip them.
