Tails or Knuckles?

Here's a small tidbit of info that I think helps for the Knuckles side of the arguement: Knuckles was essentially a villain in Sonic 3. Unknowingly, yes, but he served as a rival and antagonist. Personally, I found the actual Smash games to be devoid of villains, completely in the first one, so-so in the second, and adding one more in the third. In the current roster we have, we also have the additions of K. Rool, Bowser Jr, and Ridley, so adding Knuckles as the rival/villain character seems cool, even though he wasn't even the rival/villain in Sonic and Knuckles, or any game after that aside from some disagreements and misunderstandings that rarely happened. xD

Yeah, I voted for Knuckles. x3

Meta Knight can be seen as a villain just as much, if not more so than Knuckles. As can Wario and definately Wolf. All three were in brawl, as was Dedede (who I assume was the "one more" you mentioned). We also have Mewtwo (who can be seen as a villain), and not one but TWO Mother villains you forgot in that list. So we have 3 Mario villains, a DK villain, a Zelda villain, A Pokemon villain, a Metroid villain, 2 Kirby villains, a Starfox villain, and 2 Mother villains. That's 12. That's over 1/5 of the total roster. Also, the FE rep could be Black Night, which would add another villain.

Sonic Adventure proves you otherwise.
Actually, the whole plot of the first Adventure for Tails was of him gaining his own independence from Sonic and growing as a character so that he could handle hero responsabilities on his own. He defeated Robotnik and saved the entire Station Square from being blown up.
In Sonic Adventure 2, that quest from his prequel reflects on him. He's much more mature and independent, saving Sonic from Prison Island and defeating Eggman (again).

The other games also reflects on this. Tails got more distant than Sonic in other games and less of a sidekick.

But even though Tails is my favorite character from Sonic the Hedgehog, I agree that playing as Knuckles would be more interesting. So I voted on Knuckles.

(even more interesting though would be to play as Robotnik!)

edit: and tails is in a mech for pretty much all of the adventure games, he doesn't have very good non-mech abilities aside from, well, flying

I think it'd more like putting Wario in before Luigi, because I'd probably put in Bowser for N64 as well lol. Maybe because back then, Luigi was only an extra palette and didn't even appear in Super Mario 64. That's probably why he was secret, too, now that I think about it...

But about Tails, I had a moveset for him a few posts back. I don't know if anyone liked it, though...

you mean pretty much all of the second adventure
because there's only two scenes (and a half) where Tails in in the Tornado in the first one
aside from mechanical abilities (like bombs, robots and all), I agree that he pretty much doesn't have any other ability outside flying and... waving his tails

Tails because not only did he come first, he's like a sidekick to sonic. Like the Luigi to Mario. He would also be a diverse character rather than using his fist the entire time.
