Oldskewlz mostly, it's actually a really simple mesh with a 2x subsurf modifier and the faces set to smooth to cover up any obvious edges.
(look at me being all clever with fancy words and shit.)
Hit a snag that's being a pain in the ass though, realized there's not enough geometry around the knees to rig the legs properly, I'll have to fiddle with that when I give the poor dude some clothes. And some facial features might be cool too I guess.
Fyi, the new version of Blender is way nicer than it used to be, the interface comes close to almost making sense now.
