Well! So I logged into the forum today and found that someone left me a little Christmas present:

Looks like Samus' slope sprite just gets flipped while Mario's doesn't ... strange since Samus has always had a specific gun arm and you wouldn't think Mario's victory-sign arm would be as important ...

Thank you so much RTB! You must have incredible patience to pull this off. Either that or you're just batshit insane, which I am totally okay with.
