Emulators like Visual Boy Advance can disable some of the sound channels, so that only sound effects will be heard, etc.
You'll find such option in Options -> Sound -> The following below:
Channel 1
Channel 2
Channel 3
Channel 4
Direct Sound A
Direct Sound B
Keep in mind though, sometimes sound effects are played through Direct Sound, sometimes through the channels. So you'll need to mess around with that.
