Besides, it was one day, and it helped spread the message so that even thick skulled people finally got it.
Our Senator was in Madison earlier to discuss this and he said he would oppose it. With all the other Senators and Reps who said they would oppose, along with the PIPA/SOPA website caught copyright infringing material, these bills are quickly losing steam, and today was a big factor in helping that.
There are other ways of 'raising awareness'

Honestly, if it were this big of a worry, wouldn't people have been worrying this constantly about it before yesterday? Then just out of nowhere black outs. Black outs everywhere.

Maybe the censorship could be a good thing. People rely on computer technology far to much these days. If it wasn't there maybe people would actually talk face to face a little more, maybe read a damn book for once

Yeah, ACTA is even more terrible because of how wide it's reach is. Don't worry, there's a movement in the UK (and I'm assuming there will be in the rest of Europe to some degree) aimed at stopping that too.

People have been worrying about it longer than yesterday, the technical community has been worried about SOPA/PIPA for a long time, and there was a lot of coverage on the house debates in December. The blackouts didn't come out of nowhere, they had been planned weeks in advance; it was also mentioned on the site days ahead that it'd be down.

As for censorship, that's ridiculous. Censorship would allow governments to decide exactly what news you're allowed to see. You just need to look at countries like China and North Korea to understand why online censorship is a terrible idea.

Pull your head out of your ass. How would this help social interaction? It would be censoring of copyrighted material, not social sites. Two, ebooks would still exist as you have to buy those for the most part, unless you pirate them, but plenty of people have kindles/kindleOnPc(me)/etc. It just sounds like you were mad because you couldn't use Wikipedia for one day :L
Also all you had to do was hit the escape button as the page loaded and it would've stopped the banner from popping up. Yesterday needed to happen, it wasn't a big inconvenience, and yeah people were worried about it already, but this helped spread it to become general knowledge. And as a result, many supporters are now backing out. And I talk face to face with friends everyday Cool
EDIT: Considering you read new One Piece chapters every week online, I'm pretty sure you wouldn't like censoring taking that away too :smug:
But seriously, the government has no right censoring the internet, and you're taking it a bit too lightly, it's a pretty serious issue.

Luckily, even if the bill passed, there would be bigger protests than yesterday, and the Supreme Court would probably have something to say on it.

Actually thanks to NDAA, the US government could declare anti-SOPA and anti-PIPA activists in the US terrorists and detain them for life without due process. Anyone caught by the NDAA cannot appeal to any courts and thusly the US Supreme Court can't get involved until Congress repeals NDAA.

Of course Obama said this won't harm innocent Americans after signing it into law, but laws have loopholes... And Obama originally was going to veto NDAA...

That's for terrorist activity only, and even if SOPA and PIPA passed, you can't consider activists terrorists. The NDAA as shitty as it is has a defined list.

It wasn't just Wikipedia. It was everything I was seeing everywhere. Don't tell me to be my head out of my ass just for having a different opinion than you. Kindles are separate entities themselves, this bill wouldn't even affect them. And one piece? Naruto? I pay for my subscription to SJ, and their chapters are a mere 2 weeks behind the current Japanese manga chapters. I will most certainly live if I can't read manga on a computer screen once every Wednesday. And if worse comes to worse I wait for the physical copy. Problem solved.

RE: Save the Internet: The SOPA/PIPA thread.
It wasn't just Wikipedia is exactly the point. The point was to give you a taste of what the internet would be like under SOPA's rule. And clearly you didn't like it. Maybe you should do as Argyle suggested, get your head out of your ass, and realize that if just one day without the internet as you know it pissed you off this much, maybe instead of bitching about how the internet shouldn't have "blacked out", you should be telling Congress how much bullshit this bill is so that you will never have to go a day without your precious internet ever again.

You still have your head up your ass, the fact that you don't care about an Unconstitutional law and make it seem like we're the ones overreacting. Kindle's have internet as well, and you purchase books from Amazon, a website on the internet Wink
Also, it wasn't THAT many websites. I think the ones I encountered the "blacking out" were Google, Wiki, 4chan, and some people had a little fun with their facebooks. And going with 4chan, all you to do was move your posts over the blacked out sections and the text was highlighted so you could read. I think with Google if you signed the petition all the blacking out in the search went away.
And the Manga example was just one I personally know you do. You also said that Shonen Jump was going entirely digital, so you're not even paying for a product, but intellectual property which is horseshit.
EDIT: BADANG, I hope kyle's nephew somewhere in Sioux Falls looks up hoping to see someone's calves now.

By the way, Megaupload is already dead.

I'm sure after SOPA, PIPA and ACTA, the other filesharing sites are next.

I love how a website which was very fast to take down pirated material is being charged for piracy.

RE: Save the Internet: The SOPA/PIPA thread.
But guys don't you see if I can still buy my manga SOPA can't be all that bad right??

Also it wouldn't quite be protesting if everyone was really passive about it. Part of the point of a protest is to get word out, and sometimes you have to get in peoples faces about it--especially when so many people don't seem to understand the implications of the bill and thus don't care and wouldn't be expected to look it up on their own.

I'm paying to read it online yes, but I can still buy it in a physical form as well. Amazon has certain rights to allow kindle users to continue reading and buying books.

Just because you always feel the need to be behind something just for the sake of arguing, doesn't mean you need to call me out on my own damn opinion. Maybe your the one that should get your head out of your ass before you come complaining to me just because your porn downloading might come to a stop here real soon
