RE: TSR's Super Smash Bros Thread|Bayonetta Ballot = George W. Bush in Florida - Koopaul - 12-30-2015

Boy looking back at some of my posts I can understand why some of you hate to see me post here. And for that I'm sorry. I won't do it again I promise.

But you have to understand I never liked Smash as much as I did because it was "a fun game". I loved it because it united all my most beloved characters and settings together in one glorious celebration.

To me, Smash is inherently fun anyway. So it really doesn't mean much to me that Smash 4 is considered "fun". You think it's fun? Great. Lots of games are fun, but that's not what makes it special. What makes Smash special is the fact that it gathers beloved Nintendo characters and potential icons together.

Let me share something. The first time I saw the intro of Super Smash Bros. Melee, it was at a display at Toys R Us. I watched it and when it was done I was literally moved to tears. It was so beautiful that I couldn't control myself, my family had to get me out of there so I would cause a scene.

Yeah. That's how much I love Nintendo and its characters. I'm sure this all seems insane to most of you, but I can't help it. I have a different mentality than most of you. I mean look at this:

(07-27-2015, 09:17 AM)recme Wrote: diddy kong was the strongest character in smash 4 when smash 4 was released, which lead to him getting popular in the community. during the hoo hah phase, i bought dkc2 to see how diddy's game played.

This is one of the most bizarre and frustrating things I read in this topic. That logic is so alien. You got interested in Diddy because he was top tier? What?! To me, in my mind, that's not a good reason to like a character. By that I mean, the actual character Diddy Kong himself, not the fighter.

To me, you should like Diddy and be interested in seeing more of him and his games because he's a cool upbeat monkey who'll do anything for his best bud DK. He uses awesome gadgets and proved himself as great a hero as DK himself despite being treated as a sidekick. That's why I love Diddy Kong and was excited to see him in Brawl. And in Smash 4 he was still the same cool dude he was in Brawl, so being top tier meant nothing to me.

Don't get me wrong, I still have fun with Smash for the sake of having fun. For example, I actually think Roy (from Fire Emblem) is a really fun character to play as and I enjoy using him. But that doesn't make me like Roy himself. His character doesn't appeal to me in the slightest.

TLDR: in my mind, there's a difference between loving a character because of who that character is, and having fun with a fighter in Smash. I was passionate about Smash because I was passionate about the characters.

RE: TSR's Super Smash Bros Thread|Bayonetta Ballot = George W. Bush in Florida - Kosheh - 12-30-2015

um

I suppose all the people who got into Fire Emblem because of Marth and Roy in Melee didn't have good reasons for getting into the series then, right

Maybe that's what happened to Sakurai and now 14 Fire Emblem games later he accidentally put too many FE characters into Smash 4
!!

(also do realize the fact that recme is like half your age and thus was probably too young to enjoy DKC2 like a refined Kong-oisseur at the time the game originally released. this may seem like an alien concept here, but including Pit in Brawl was a great move as it brought about a renewed interest in the Kid Icarus games to the point where a new Kid Icarus game was greenlit. now it's one of the best 3DS games on the console. for younger gamers, seeing Diddy's popularity in Smash culture might've brought about a renewed interest in him. Crazy, I know. Imagine if Fox was a top tier character for years in Melee and that alone pushed sales for a terrible DS game that ruined the series for some people. Oh wait, oops, it did)

RE: TSR's Super Smash Bros Thread|Bayonetta Ballot = George W. Bush in Florida - Kriven - 12-30-2015

I never liked playing Marth and Roy in Melee, but I was super interested in their games because I'd never heard of Fire Emblem before. Now I'm big into Fire Emblem. It has nothing to do with how well they fought in Melee... a certain amount of it has to do with the mystique behind these characters who I don't even know what they're saying because Japanese.

I don't know, becoming a fan of a franchise character because of how they play in a game with mechanics seriously far removed from those of their own franchise is strange. And basing it on "I like them because strong" just reminds me of the people who are only into DBZ or Superman because they can blow up planets. It feels shallow.

Oh, Ness got me into Earthbound. I probably wouldn't have if it weren't for him being in Smash and the game being on the Wii U's VC.
I tried Earthbound Beginnings, but eh... It didn't stick. I will try Mother 3 if/when it hits VC (probably as Earthbound 2), because I'd like to experience Lucas as well.

I also gave that GBA Fire Emblem game a shot, that came as part of the Ambassador Program on 3DS. Not my type of game.

Wha... huh... Smash literally throws interest into your favorite game franchise right into your lap and your reaction is still to complain? Interest is interest, if you are going to complain how someone becomes interested in a game as if there is some sort of unwritten rule about it then... my god, this thread is so dumb.

I guarantee a lot of the games like Earthbound or Fire Emblem wouldn't even get recognized if it weren't for smash.

That's pretty much how powerful of a marketing tool Smash is, you think you know Nintendo because of Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, or whatever other big series nintendo has but you find out that there is a lot more behind them once you play Smash.

I owned and loved Earthbound before it was cool.

Yeah, that's...pretty much what Smash has been pushing for since day one, and I could swear this was stated by Sakurai in an interview. More than tout the greatness of Nintendo's existing franchises, it also raised awareness for the more obscure franchises Nintendo has and celebrates them globally. I'd probably argue that most of the new additions to Smash this time around (off the top of my head: Little Mac, Greninja, Duck Hunt, and Cloud) were added to further appeal to Western players - and while of course they're not as obscure as say like...Sukapon or K.Rool, they definitely raise awareness to classics from Nintendo's library [except for Cloud, but you probably figured out who that appeals to]

Like, a majority of the teenagers that are recme's age have probably never played the original Duck Hunt (and probably never will play it with the NES Zapper) but their inclusion in the new Smash game has probably raised curiosity to seek out and play the original game. :V

All the more reason Mike Jones from StarTropics should've been added ;3;. Raise awareness to their own original American IP, and if it gathered enough attention, make a Startropics 3!

That is true, given that Duck hunt came out on the Wii U same time Duck hunt was confirmed in smash, then you have Little Mac and Cloud being there as well. Though I'd argue that Greninja's inclusion was more because the Pokemon company suggested it to Sakurai to give Gen 6 pokemon some representation. If it wasn't for that Mewtwo probably would have been pushed into the roster in the game when it came out a year and a half ago instead of being pushed to DLC, either way you look at it I feel that Mewtwo would appeal more to western players who missed him in Brawl (Then of course, who's to say that eastern players didn't want him back as much as western players? that's another subject)

Come to think of it being that kid who was born in '94 when the glory days of the SNES were at it's peak, I never really knew about a lot of other nintendo games until I got myself a copy of Melee and a gamecube sometime in 2004-05. That's pretty much what led me into retro gaming for awhile and that's how I came to try out the original NES for awhile.

I don't think I ever mentioned it but I voted for Wonder Red on the poll. It's too bad that game wasn't super popular. My girlfriend voted for Rayman.

But yeah, I was super happy when I learned Ness was in the first Smash. I could actually talk about Earthbound without people being completely clueless.

Yeah back in Melee, Marth and Roy interested me because they were mysterious and unknown. They were so stylistically different from the rest of the cast. It made me want to know more about them.

It had nothing to do with how strong they were or how fun they were to play as.

Of course, now Marth and Roy are a drop in a sea of characters just like them. Theya re less interesting because of it.

i um, honestly
never knew about StarTropics before you started posting about it

and i still don't know anything about it besides it being a game for the NES that retrophiles keep mentioning :/ Is it the only good NST game or something? lol

see, I KNEW there was one IP i forgot to mention and of course that very one's the one that you post and say "oh man that was it i really wish they'd make a new one!!"

RE: TSR's Super Smash Bros Thread|Bayonetta Ballot = George W. Bush in Florida - Koopaul - 12-30-2015

I too really wanted Smash to give obscure Nintendo franchises more attention.

That's why I advocated so much for Barbara the Bat. I really want to see her series go Stateside. Also I just live her character, Shes just oozing with personality.

RE: TSR's Super Smash Bros Thread|Bayonetta Ballot = George W. Bush in Florida - TomGuycott - 12-30-2015

I actually tried to find what I could on Barbara on YouTube, and I can probably attribute it mostly to the fact I can't read her dialogue, but based solely on visuals the majority of what I see of her isn't very visually expressive. A lot of the pictures of her seem to be the same face in a mildly different pose.
